Hi Uniform. I take magnesium taurate as one of the types I use.It was recommended to me several years ago as a particularly good formula for cardiac issues. They are big pills but I've never found smaller ones. I also have a problem swallowing large pills. Rather than give them up I always take most pills with any food that helps the pill just slide down my throat. Some of the foods I use are mashed avocado, oatmeal, and even the yolk of a soft boiled egg. Sometimes I use a bite of something I've cooked- even fish. I chew the food well and just before I swallow it I pop the pill in my mouth and without chewing just let it slide down my throat with he ready-to-swallow food. This may sound off the wall but I had radiation years ago and swallowing anything can sometimes be a problem The radiation narrowed my esophagus just enough that I have to be careful with pills especially capsules as they can stick in the throat. Always looking for ways to get my pills down on any given day. I also, of course, have water to drink. But water alone will not get many pills easily down the esophagus. Convoluted but hope it helps.I usually don't try to swallow more than one pill at a time. I'm careful because one time I swallowed a capsule that got stuck halfway down. I didn't choke but before I was able to completely swallow it the capsule began to dissolve and the medicine inside tasted awful and burned my throat. So swallowing pills is a big deal for me.BTW I carry a toddler 's sippy cup in my purse (they are small) so don't have to lean over a water fountain when out.Pills are difficult to swallow with your head bent down. Probably more than any of you wanted to know about swallowing pills! LOL irina1975

Hi Uniform 96, I do exactly what Irina1975 does, I have problems swallowing any pills so take a bite of a biscuit with a sip of juice to soften it or a few grapes and just as I am about to swallow, In goes the pill and down it goes with the food, it almost tricks my brain into thinking i am swallowing normal food. It works a treat. Great to hear I am not alone.

in reply toicklebud99

You are definitely not alone. And thanks for the ideas about different foods. The usual 'old time' foods are applesauce and ice cream. (They always have that in hospitals here for help with pills). But sometimes it's hard to find healthy applesauce here (US). Usually has sugar and even sugarless applesauce has chemicals. Honestly, sometimes I believe many food companies think additives and preservatives are a food group.! As for ice cream-yummy! It might take the whole pint of esp chocolate to get the pill down. LOL. So best not to have it in the house.! I esp like the grapes.

Really helpfull to some people I expect. Thank you.

Thanks for support. I was thinking about having gone on and on re such a small subject as taking pills but for many older people it is a big deal. Common medical ideas is to open a capsule and dump in a patient's food. That's right ruin the food and if anyone has ever tasted what's inside the capsule they will understand why there IS a capsule. When I was young I could take all the pills at once without water. But for many those days are gone. Take care.

Of course everyone is careful about opening capsules. For Magnesium this is OK but not for all medicines.

Hi Uniform96,you might want to try magnesium oil/gel.Comes in spray bottle, just spray on (usually on bottom of feet) rub in and it's absorbed into body. Lot easier than dealing with the pills.

Best wishes, Shaun

Thank you , Shaun, I didn't realise magnesium oil could be obtained .

in reply toUniform96

Hi. Quick tutorial. Make your own , it's cheaper and healthier as it only has 2 ingredients. See if you can find my post with directions. I wrote it within the last few weeks. I use magnesium chloride flakes but you can use mag sulfate also (Epsom salts), It's a 1/2 and 1/2 mixture. 1/2mag-1/2 boiling distilled water. Mix, stir, dissolve. Cool. Fill a spray bottle for bathroom, spritz on arms, legs, torso after shower. Done. Keep excess in fridge till time to refill your spray bottle in your bath.

Hi Shaun. That's a great idea and I'm glad you are already doing it. I do too, have for awhile.Skin is a great way to absorb. I wrote a post not long ago re magnesium oil and gave my recipe for making my own. Don't know how to tell anyone to find it as I am in first grade re navigating my way around computer sites.LOL

Thanks irina,I'll see if I can find your recipe. I've been using EASE by activation products that I order from Amazon. Would definitely like to try and make my own though. Not that computer literate myself, usually just muddle my way through. LOL

in reply toShaunMB

Hi Shaun. If you can't find it PM me -so everyone doesn't have to sit thru my lengthy recipe again- and I'll gladly send you everything you need to make your own. So easy. So cheap and 1/2 & 1/2 means a 50% solution. irina1975

I find sitting up straight but tipping my head forward when I swallow helps. The natural inclination (no pun intended) is to tip your head back when trying to get the pill down.

I once read that you can crush magnesium tablets and dissolve them in water to take. So I guess you could just empty your capsules into some water the same way.

I too have found that the best way to swallow tablets is to bend the head forward as you swallow.

Is it ok to empty capsule ? I had thought of doing this but I presumed they are in a capsule for a reason,

I think it was Carolyn Dean who said you could crush tablets. You could Google her name and magnesium and see what you find. She talks a lot about adding magnesium to our diets.

I will do that, thank you.

in reply toUniform96

You can. But some capsule med is really terrible tasting and I had a Prozac capsule melt halfway down once and my throat was sore from the burning for almost 2 days. Probably taste depends on the medicine. I can swallow some small pills but currently I am on Clindamycin (antibiotic) for ten days-3 a day. Got them filled yesterday. They are HUUUUGE pink capsules that I believe would win an Olympic medal for the largest capsule ever made! We went to an Indian restaurant for lunch on way home from pharmacy and I swallowed my first dose with some very tasty goat curry sauce.

I was told to take 500 gm Mg twice a day to help with my heart function. I was told it didn’t matter which compound. The first one I tried gave me rashes. The second didn’t but were huge however I break them in 2 and find it easier to swallow. I believe you can get powder too.

Where they capsules or tablets? Thank you for your reply.

dragonflyjan in reply toUniform96

They are solid tablets which break easily I guess you could crush them.

also, epsom salts, just add to your bath and soak in the goodness

Not if you are pregnant and happy about it.

I believe many here take magnesium citrate which is available as a 400mg tablet. Also very large, but easily cut into four pieces with a pill cutter.

Thank you for your advice , I might try that ,I have a pill cutter.

Following a recommendation from a Nutritionist several years ago, I have been using Ancient Minerals Ultra magnesium oil.

Hi Mrtee, where would I be able to obtain those from please?

mrtee profile image

I buy mine from a local health products shop but I’ve just checked and it is available on Amazon. I’ve had about 21 months of reduced af episodes but recently the frequency has increased possibly related to other health issues or the fickle nature of the condition. However, I still have faith in it and at this stage continue to apply before bedtime daily. In addition to the Ultra there is a “standard” bottle which requires more sprays.

Many thanks , I will obtain some and give it a try.
