My daughter gave me Mg tablets when I was diagnosed with AF. I had some severe bouts of diarrhoea and am no afraid to take any more. Any comments? PS. Have cut my calcium tablets by half (for osteoporosis)

Yes loose bowels means you have too much magnesium. If you have cleared it with your doctors try a smaller dose but never take anything without approval of those who are treating you.

I just bought some magnesium tablets Bob - I've been having leg cramps. Should I not take it till I've discussed it with the doctor?

I honestly believe that whilst some supplements can help we should NEVER take anything without first running it past our doctors. There are so many contra-indications even for something like epsom salt baths that one could make things worse rather than better. Yes I take magnesium tablets but these are always listed on my drugs list whenever I see a doctor. I will be seeing my GP next week about leg cramps as well since they have been launching me out of bed some nights recently. I blame statins! I'll let you know what she says.

Thanks Bob, I will run the magnesium past the doc then (not too literally!). I'd be very interested to hear what yours says about the leg cramps. Mine are quite painful!

Have you checked your SpO2 levels regularly? Low levels can cause cramps.

I was advised not to take magnesium supplements but to concentrate on getting it from food. You can get an idea of foods rich in this mineral by Googling it.

That's strange because I was told by hospital doc that too much magnesium does have a laxative effect. Sandra

Why cut the calcium supplement if you have osteoporosis? I take 1000mg of calcium daily and no magnesium because It is contraindicated for another condition. I have no AF since ablation and have been free for 12 months.

I do take a mineral bath once a week, either Dead Sea salts or Epsom salts - high in Magnesium but also contains other essential minerals. Minerals can be absorbed through the skin with none of the side effects of supplements. One of the symptoms of low magnesium is muscle spasm, a salt bath eases the discomfort.

Without specific testing you will not know your body cell level of any mineral also the serum levels will always be different than the cellular level, your serum will always maintain the level at the expense of your muscle cells. You will be far better off ensuring you have a really good diet of preferably organic foods with a very high emphasis on green leafy veg and root veg such as carrots and beets. Research magnesium rich foods would be my advice and maintain good diet, exercise as you are able with a mix of cardiac, resistance and suppleness - that is the advice of my EP who is very keen on reducing risk factors for good cardiac function.

Why is 1000mg of calcium supplements considered not good when the same amount in food is good?

Sounds like too much MG. Try putting on skin in bath water good way to use it.

I buy Epsom Salts which is Magnesium and pour some into bath.

Can also mix some in bowl and wipe over skin.

I find it helped me++. Kate

Hi bigleg Started taking magnesium suppliment 3 weeks ago feeling a lot better but I,m the other way for the last 2 weeks i,ve been constipated to hell.I take 250mgs of mag oxide one day and 200mgs of mag citrate the next.I bought the oxide by mistake so i,m just finishing them before I go completely on to citrate or turate as I,ve been told these are the easiest to absorb into the body.

We are all magnesium deficient. There are so many forms of magnesium one can take. I like magnesium malate, it helps ease muscle pain and it gives me energy so I take it early in the day, the heart is a muscle it needs magnesium. I believe magnesium saved me from a heart attack when I was in a-fib for 16 hours.

Thanks to everybody for the comments. My first query and I'm overwhelmed with lots of digesting to do!

I think you have said it all bigleg except perhaps not mentioning that Magnesium citrate has a much better absorption percentage. In error I bought from Boots what turned out to be Magnesium oxide which resulted in diarrhoea. After reading more extensively I bought Magnesium citrate tablets with the result that I feel much better and my diarrhoea has ceased.

Good post! George
