Chronic kidney disease

Well when I thought everything was going well got recalled from a blood test to be told I have CKD probably as a result of having had high blood pressure and Gp prescribed another BP tab. I queried this as I am on flecainide 50 x2 amlodapine and bisoprolol of course warfarin and statins. My BP is low heart 54 resting all good. Unhappy with gp intervention as the response when I queried how this new med would work with my current regime I am on was met with "I am only giving you 2mg I could give you 32mg" apart from feeling patronised I went to my wonderful pharmacist who was concerned about introducing the new med. I contacted my consultant and saw him on Friday. He was quietly and diplomatically astounded. Firstly my numbers had dropped from 59 in January to 57 now but no protein showed up. This reading can be affected by many things and antibiotics are one of the culprits and I have had two courses recently due to tooth abscess. He advised that the tab prescribed would do more harm than good. He said he will write to her and that will be an interesting read. Don't know much about renal issues but clearly a clear link between heart and kidneys . I will monitor this more often have regular blood test. So the real point of raising this issue and writing this missive is to say question treatment and get a second opinion. Regards Chris

Good advice and warning from you Chris.

I've never actually been told there's anything wrong with my kidneys, but if I go into hospital they look at my previous blood results and say, 'There was a slight abnormality in your kidneys last time and we're just going to check that it hasn't got any worse'. I've never been told anything afterwards - to be honest I don't think I want to know unless it gets to the point where I really need to.

The new world of medicine, no more the cosy 'Dr Findlay's Casebook' (if you are UK and of a certain age), personally I was a big fan of 'Your Life in Their Hands'.

My GP marked my chart with this kidney issue at my last wellness exam, even though my creatinine and BUN numbers are close to the top of the range but not considered "High." It sort of made me mad, since kidney function is important to monitor while on apixaban.

I feel I have to be more proactive not that I felt I hadn't been but always good to question.
