Neutropenia

Has anyone continued doing Docetaxel after having a bout of neutropenia? I have taken 6 cycles and each progressed a bit more with the side effects of mouth ulcers and flu like symptoms beginning about 2 weeks after the infusion. My PSA is dropping, so I’m wondering if a reduced infusion dosage may be in order or am I done with this treatment. I fell on the ice and broke my ankle on Feb 23rd and was found to be extremely neutropenic upon being admitted to the hospital for surgery. I had one transfusion and my neutrophil levels returned to within normal range…just on the lower end. I’m now recuperating at home and feeling great other than having the ortho boot that I will be wearing for about the next 3 weeks. Thanks in advance for any information.

My husband had neutropenia while taking doxetaxel. He continued treatment but quit after 7 rounds due to side affects. The oncologist didn't seem too concerned about the neutropenia . He told my husband to avoid being around too many people and to watch for any signs of infection.

Different disease, similar treatment. My wife had taxol, sister drug to docetaxel, for part of her ovarian cancer treatment. When white counts were down she had an injection of neupogen in the off week of treatment. This started after the third infusion and continued until the final one. It allowed her to continue treatment without interruption. The continuing treatment was the goal, mostly, of the neupogen shot. A delay in treatment might allow white cell increase but neupogen is reliable.

Neulasta is administered in a different manner. Same result. Decision of doctor and patient.

my husband went Neutropenic and was hospitalized with a runaway infection on his first infusion. After that they gave him Nuelasta which helped him not be Neutropenic but ultimately he had to stop due to side effects. He had neuropathy and it was affecting his heart. I would ask for the Nuelasta at the minimum.

I had fairly severe neutropenia after my first treatment of docetaxel, which was caught because I developed a slight fever. The oncologist put me on Neulasta, administered at the same time as the chemo, for the remaining five docetaxel doses. It worked well, brought white blood counts up almost to low normal. The "however" is that the charge to my insurance (this is in the U.S.) was $18,000 to $20, 000 per dosage! I'm not sure whether this was negotiated downwards, but be aware of that if you might be on the hook for payment.

How much should it cost to treat neutropenia with Neulasta?

As of Q1 2024 the list price for Neulasta® is $6,418.0* per dose. Neulasta® is a single dose administered once per chemotherapy cycle. Most patients do not pay the list price. Your actual cost will vary. Talk to your insurance provider.

*List price is also referred to as wholesale acquisition cost or WAC. WAC is the price at which Amgen sells its products to wholesalers.

Note: $18,000 to $20,000 per dose = Bargain prices. ...................................................................................................................................................................................

BTW How much does bottled water cost per gallon?

In exploring the true cost of bottled water, we have to look at financial costs. On average, a 20-ounce bottle of water costs approximately $1.50. When translating this into gallons, water costs approximately $9.60 per gallon on average when consumed in bottled water form.

How much is a gallon of "regular gas" for an automobile in NYC = the Current Average is $3.147 per gallon.

As for the cost to the group for my humor, it's priceless.

Good Luck, Good Health and Good Humor.

Back in 2017, I had 8 rounds Docetaxel. They caught neutropenia with my then monthly blood test. I would get my Docetaxel infusion, and then, for the next 4 days straight go in for a shot for the neutropenia. Can't remember the drug and too lazy to go look it up. Made my legs ache like crazy. I used to beg not to have the shot, but they showed no mercy. My anniversary date was March 5. 8 years, innumerable bone metastasis. My last scans, bone and CT came back so good I ordered the disks for last 2 years. Comes with a viewer, but it's Greek to me. Maybe I should have j-o-h-n take a look at them. Anyone know of a service that will give me a second opinion or am I just looking a gift horse in the mouth? This cancer was such a priority ONE once. I try to push it away from my thoughts now. PSA is steadily going up now. What? Me worry? Wishing you all the very best.
