Just wanted to update you all on this in case anyone is thinking of surgery to fix something non-cancer related. My husband was looking into getting a hip replacement back in 2021 when he was diagnosed with PC. So the hip replacement was put on hold,. But the hip arthritis kept getting worse and he could no longer walk more than a block. It pained me to see how hard it was for him to walk.
So , with our Oncologists blessing, and after getting cleared by GP, Cardio and surgeon. he had a hip replacement in December, 2023. Best thing he could have done. He had PT for 8 weeks before and 12 weeks after surgery - which was like having a personal trainer, and his recovery went really well. So he is now able to walk 4 miles a day and has been able to do more weight and aerobic exercise which should be helping to kill those pesky cancer cells. His PSA continues to drop and yesterdays PSMA PET scan showed a marked decrease in all the cancer spots with many now undetectable.

Great to hear. I have been on Lupron and Abiraterone for most of the last 11+ years, except for 3 "vacations" during the first 5. During my journey , I had a knee replacement 6 years ago, disc surgery several years ago, and a hip replacement 9 weeks ago. I had a different MO when I had the first 2 surgeries and he had no objection to either, My present MO who has been treating me for the last 5-6 yrs, seemed to be concerned about me getting the recent hip surgery and asked if the orthopedist was aware of my cancer (including a large tumor in my acetabulum (which is the area that surrounds the "ball" part of the hip). Of course, he was aware of my cancer issues. The procedure went very well- better than I expected. I returned to playing an aggressive game of Pickleball after 6 weeks (instead of the 12 I thought I would need) and played the last 2 days in a row and hope to play more later today. I did have to stop taking my abiraterone 5 days before surgery (although nobody told me to do that for my knee replacement 6 yrs ago). My PSA started rising over the last 18 months or so from; <.05, .05, .06, .09, .14 I will find out how my PSA is doing at the end of the month. Obviously, it's trending upward but hopefully the 5 day break from abiraterone and surgery near the acetabulum won't be much of a factor.
