Taxotere

I am looking for any information regarding men with prostate cancer, who have had chemo using Taxotere. Please tell me what we should expect with the chemo treatments such as side effect and how it might effect him, how long did it take for PSA to decrease. My husband will have to start chemo for prostate cancer ASAP. After Xandi failed doctor put him on Zytiga. His PSA went up over 700 points this month. Since changing from Xandi to Zytiga PSA has gone up 914 points. This is my revised post from yesterday. Thank you in advance.

We’re in a similar boat. His PSA was 329 before 1st Taxotere. His 2nd infusion was 2 days ago. (See bio) Psa came down to 250 and major mid-back pain gone. I was terrified before he started, but so far, not awful. His main symptoms were nausea, occasional stomach cramps. No hair loss yet, but we’re expecting that to come soon. Ugh! Since his 2nd infusion, he’s still active, but tired, and so far, no nausea. He made me dinner tonight and ate well. Hang in there and take it a day at a time. I think the chemo takes PSA down best when PSA is high. Wishing you luck.

How about neuropathy in hands or feet? Is he doing the ice mitten/booties thing?

Funny you should ask about the mittens/booties. He laughed at me when I mentioned it. We keep a good sense of humor. Knowing him, I can’t see him doing that. So far so good! Fingers crossed!

my husband also refused the mittens and booties that I ordered for him (men) But thankfully he only has a little neuropathy in his feet after 6 taxotere treatments. The chemo worked well for him with no nausea. - mainly stomach pains and insomnia from the steroids. From chemo his PSA dropped to 50. He has been on abiraterone since January 2022 and it is still slowly dropping. Down to 1.79 last month.

The first infusion was uneventful until 3 days after when I experienced severe muscle pains, mainly in thighs. That has improved with each successive treatment but still happens, to a lesser degree.Minimal GI issues except for increased gassiness, especially in the late afternoon/evenings.

After 4th infusion, began having neuropathy symptoms in fingers, despite using cold therapy during the infusion. My taste is diminished. There is severe fatigue for the first 10 days post infusion.

Just finished my 5th treatment. PSA undectable after 4th infusion . I’m also on leupron and Nebeqa.

Used Penguin cool cap to prevent hair loss, it has worked so far.

It isn’t a pleasant experience but it is manageable. Best of luck!

My personal experience is with taxotere in a clinical trial in 2001. After the RP, I had "biochemical recurrence." I lost all my hair and all my nails (20). It was a dark time, but I was never in pain.

Hello MsHope, You've been with us since 2019, so I think my questions would now be appropriate. How old is your dear hubby and where are you located? All voluntary info.

Since you husband likes humor and you both laughed about the cold hands/mittens, I would like to tell him a quick one. But you must close your eyes...... and do not peek. Including all other ladies....

Ready? Here goes "close em"...

On a really cold day a guy gets into his girlfriend's car and sitting next to her he says "Wow Honey it sure is cold out there, my hands are very cold, do you mind if I put them between your legs?" Honey replies "Dear, don't your ears ever get cold?"................

See Ladies, I warned you.....

Good Luck, Good Health and Good Humor.

Joke was funny!!! My husband is a young 80 years old. We live in Texas. We have been to MD Anderson. He is being treated in Victoria as they follow the same protocol as MD Anderson. His oncologist is one of the top in this areas.

2-3 days after infusion my energy level on a 1-10 scale dropped from 10 to 5. Each day my energy increased until it was 9-10 within 5-7 days. I experienced the same on each infusion.
