Hola Gents,

I have not posted in a while. MO started me on Zytiga; I was off that after 2 weeks. Mid-January I got a UTI. Took a vacay to Aruba. The day I finished antibiotics for the UTI, I tested positive for Covid. Spent 5 days in my hotel room. Just glad I had an ocean view room and a balcony. At the tail end of Covid I got sinusitis, which turned into another infection. I have found out it’s chronic.

MO got me on to a clinical trial. Unfortunately, I had to cease taking my proton pump inhibitor for a form of GERDS known as Silent GERDS. I did have another biopsy of my prostate. No cancer there anymore, just 8 or so places in the bones. Unfortunately, without the PPI I was miserable and could not move forward with the clinical trial.

April 30 I had my first infusion of docetaxel. Yes, there are side effects. One thing that freaked me out was all of my hair that was in the sink this morning. No more travel for me this year and probably no more hair! Better to be alive with no hair than dead with a full head of hair. Just my outlook. Thanks

Why did you stop your PPI?

MJCA profile image
MJCA in reply toSeasid

It was a requirement for the clinical trial my MO tried to get me on.

Seasid profile image
Seasid in reply toMJCA

I didn't know that such a requirement exict. Why is it there? Does PPI interfere with some medication?

Which trial is it? Maybe you could have a workaround. Could you consult a gastro enterolygist to replace your medication with something what is allowed? I was using PPI but now only very occasionally. Before I could not drink coffee without PPI, but now I don't need it. I am also using a sleep apnoea machine CPAP and that helps me also.

I also stopped taking Aspirin.

MJCA in reply toSeasid

Hi. You are asking me questions I have no answers for. I have learned most clinical trials have patients cease taking a PPI. Why I do not know. I was put on two other meds in lieu of a PPI which did not help. I don’t think a gastroenterologist would be of any assistance. At this juncture, I am not in the clinical trial.

my own experiance is that if you jump left an right you could solve any medical problem. you just need enough motivatin.

i am now trying to solve my sleep problem. we all need doctors to avise us. i now have some ideas what to do. just be persistan and the solution will come.

I have had this mother fucker of a disease over 17 years. I have jumped left and right so many times I could have created a handful of dances. Isn’t the fact that I am STILL here after > 17 fact that I am motivated? Sometimes you have to change the path you are on take a more sensible route.

my husband started on zytiga and prednisone this week. Also Erleada injection. Curious as to what made you stop zytiga?

I was famished ALL the time. I gained 9 pounds in 2 weeks. I was eating crap like pork rinds. There were other SE that I don’t remember. It was only for 2 weeks last December.

Hello Drandma, I just dropped off a similar regimen, except for the hormone suppression drug, which in my case is Lupron. (I will continue to get an infusion every four months) The SE are unbearable in my case, I puffed up 30 pounds in a two months period, I experienced some very pain full muscle cramps, spasms and feet twitching, High blood pressure, which I've never had it before) and constant very dry mouth. This is besides the hot flashes and mood changes from Lupron. Good luck to your husband.

Drandma in reply toBlueribbon63

I was mistaken about the name of the hormone shot. It is Eligard not Erleada (don’t think that’s a hormone shot). Did you experience any nausea while on Zytiga, did it affect your liver enzymes?

Blueribbon63 profile image
Blueribbon63 in reply toDrandma

LeuprorelinBrand name: Eligard

Hormone Associated Therapy and Sex hormone suppression

It can treat endometriosis, uterine fibroids, and premature puberty. It can also treat prostate cancer.

I did have a couple occurrences of nausea, my labs only abnormal change was elevated glucose, I thank God that I am very healthy otherwise.

To be honest, I need to let you know that I have been HIV+ for over 30 years, I've always been on a treatment and I am undetectable for at least 10 years. This is a reason why I have to be careful about getting a cancer medicine that affects the immune system as mine is already compromised.

wonderful news to be nondetectable gor so long. Best wishes to you!

Hi,

This round I have been on Lupron going on six years. Thanks for the advice. In close to 17 years I can say “Been there, done that”, for just about everything except for Cryo and Xtandi/enzalutamide.

Sorry to hear about your crappy trip. I stopped flying 15 years ago as I almost always got sick (cold or flu).

Anyways are you doing any chemo SE prevention like ice packs etc…?

Just asking for any future chemo for me.

MJCA profile image
MJCA in reply toKocoPr

I love to travel. Prior to chemo coming into the picture I had a few trips planned this year. No, I am not doing ice packs. It’s not worth the effort. When I showered yesterday, I clogged the drain twice with hair falling out. Rather than hair constantly falling out and freaking me out, I just shaved my head yesterday. I ordered some head covers from Amazon. Voila I’m done!

A few options that may work when you can’t take ppi. gaviscon advance, or reflux gourmet both form raft barriers that prevent acid reflux from coming up. Never lay flat you need to be elevated by gravity by at least 6 inches, don’t go to bed until 3-4 hours after last meal, no food after dinner.

I have something known as SILENT GERDS. No heartburn, no indigestion. Instead, my body starts making mucus. I have a constant post nasal drip. In the past it turned into bronchitis and then pneumonia. Years ago, an allergist was going to treat it as non-allergic rhinitis; I said to myself, “That’s bullshit”. I did some research and discovered it was silent GERDS. While off my PPI I woke one morning choking. I know my body and I know what it requires. But thank you.

I run a group on acid reflux, very familiar with lpr. Was just making a suggestion

Sam -

My apologies. Not many know of the this type of GERDS. While off the PPI, I was on Pepcid and sucralfate which did nothing to assist. Once I was back on Dexilant, my symptoms went away. I ordered reflux gourmet from Amazon at the suggestion of my MO. I went off the clinical trial prior to it shipping, so I canceled the order. Thank you.

Prevacid has been my "goto" drug for GERDS for more than 20 years. I has literally saved my life. It has been generic now for more than a decade but I have found nothing that works better.

MJCA profile image
MJCA in reply toRocketman1960

Thanks. Prevacid IS a proton pump inhibitor. I have taken that too.

Yes it is! Docs tell me its not good to take long term but I have found nothing that works better. Carry On my brother.

My GERD disappeared once my MO had me take daily calcium carbonate to prevent bone loss.
