Hi everyone! My husband was prescribed Leaquin after stent replacement. I forgot the equal antibiotic that you all recommended and tried to ask the doc but he looked at me like I was just plain old stupid! Feeling tired and frustrated, sitting here with this prescription in my lap. Thankyou to all of you in advance!

Azithromycin is likely the drug you are trying to recall. Levaquin has a significant set of side-effects, particularly those associated with torn ligaments and ultimately anaphylaxis (both affected me). My doctors have told me that while it's valuable there are many alternatives which are usually equally effective without the dangerous side effects. But as in all similar situations, YMMV, who gets the side effects seems almost totally random. I suggest you do a search on "levaquin and stents" and start reading the medical literature. Cefdinir or Rocephin are alternatives to the very dangerous fluoroquinolone drugs.

The below is just the beginning of dangerous side effects that the fluoroquinolones cause.

FDA: Fluoroquinolones Boost Risk of Aortic Ruptures, Tears. The FDA recently issued a drug safety announcement(fda.gov) advising that fluoroquinolone antibiotics can increase the risk for ruptures or tears in the aorta. An aortic dissection or rupture of an aortic aneurysm can lead to dangerous bleeding or even death, the agency said.

Thank you BerkeBear and Curumba…. I am not good with this and let them intimidate me. I know how my husband feels, I am his advocate. When I asked for an alternative his reply was “Tylenol has pages of side effects, too, so if you had a headache, you wouldn’t take a Tylenol. I’m not here to debate you, it will be waiting for you at the pharmacy”. They bring me down and I am actually crying !!

I think crying makes us human . Most of us have cried rivers ..better than holding it inside now . Imho I worry about those that can’t cry ! 🙏❤️

Miomarito,

In my case, the fluoroquinolones attacked old, long healed, injuries. I will never completely recover.

Last week at a doctor's practice I had a conversation with another fellow while we were waiting. He showed me the scars where surgery had been done to repair the damage to BOTH his Achilles tendons! He told me he lost one after taking the fluoroquinolone he had been prescribed and because of that he showered while sitting on a plastic chair. As he arose from the chair one day when he had finished showering his other Achilles tendon ripped.

When he arose to leave the room, he walked with difficulty as an aged man who was barely able to walk. He had told me that he had just recovered enough to not use a walker.

oh Curumba, I am crying for all of us… God Bless us all to be strong and do the best we can. Thank you❤️

I have on my medical records that I should not be given any fluoroquinolones, since I had reactions (ligament connected) in the past. That doesn't stop them from trying--I've learned while in the hospital to ask what they're giving me every time they come to give me drugs--twice there were fluoroquinolones, and I had to say "no". One time I had to argue it out with the nurse, who was probably overworked and didn't want to take the time to connect with the prescribing doc for an alternative prescription, and I was the one being treated as if I were stupid or irresponsible for saying "no, I won't take it".

jim, it’s pathetic that we have to feel this stress of saying no, I am not good with this! I am finding my tolerance Is waning, just plain old tired from it!

ah, noi tutti--vivere è imparare!

I did two months of Levaquin for a staff infection when it first came out many years ago . I blam it for severe neuropathy . There was a class action suit against it for this . I missed the five year deadline fighting C . I refuse levaquin . I had bi-lateral neuphrostimy tubes then internal stents for a total of two yrs . I was constantly colonized with ( strepp , e-coli and other uti’s the entire time .In the end , only bactrim would work . I gained immunity to the rest of them including cipro . I got major joint pains from the antibiotics and djd is now an issue . I pray that he gets the stents out ASAP and gets off all of those heavy antibiotics . I did . It’s been over six yrs that I escaped that hell . He can also! 🙏

in reply to

Lu , Jim is same, internal stents since last February when his colonized infection started. Nothing is touching it. He was living with the infection without antibiotics, no pain, clear urine, feeling good. I make sure every day he consumes the stuff that keeps him fighting it but never entirely making it go away. Before the stents and C both of us so healthy always having fun, no drugs… what a change in our lives. Believe me Lou, when I tell you this… my heart breaks for your suffering, as I watch the changes in my wonderful husband every day. Jim is 74 and I am 72 but never for one day felt our age.

You both look great to me! I don’t worry about him , because he has your love . The greatest med of all . With the changing out of first the tubes ,then afterwards th3 same with the stents tri- monthly they it only took about 3 days to recolonization everytime . .. Mine were plastic stents …Keep those healthy habits . 🙏❤️

in reply to

Lu I am happy for you, no more tubes but why did they say you didn’t need them any more?

in reply to

Initially ,I needed them due to pc tumors blocking my urethra and bladder . Lupron ,imrt ,and another adt cleared the tumors releasing me from all tubes and stents . Oh happy day , it was . ✌️I wish him the same soon .

in reply to

ok, that’s what jim is doing, on Lupron and starting xtandi. Oh man, we can’t give up!!❤️
