Medical Marijuana for Improving a Poor Appetite

Boonster profile image

Does it actually work? Anyone tried taking medical marijuana to improve appetite? I have a friend taking chemo for breast cancer, and the chemo is ruining her appetite.

Thanks very much for anything you can share about your experience.

Boy howdy ..does it ever. Plus there are added advantages of strong mood elevation and many others. Ask your corner pot shop what strains they have that make the “ munchies “ and munchies with the giggles is a bonus.

There are a large number of guys here with “ extensive “ personal cannabis experience that will probably add their own thoughts.

Peace brother 😁😁😁

It absolutely helps. Anyone who has imbibed will tell you so. Its a no brainer. And yes as brother Kal said it also comes with other benefits. I highly recommend it anytime but especially during chemo. (help with appetite, mood, sense of well being, dampen symptoms of malaise, on and on).

Well that's not really what one eyed meant ha ha.Sometimes and not always because it varies with the person but often and especially if she is already having appetite problem it is best to let the person eat what they want on chemo but of course not way out of balance.

Chemo can be for some a time when palliative treatment is absolutely important.

That means finding pleasure in life wherever it is hiding and sometimes eating what one desires is part of that.

Just had a brain scan yesterday. They I thought I may have had a stroke but it was a TIA brain event. OTOH , they did find chronic small vessel white matter ischemic disease probably exacerbated by the 4 years on Xtandi . Explains my slurred speech, balance issues and short term memory loss. Just a cherry on the top … no biggie, cudda been WAY worse.

A relief really. It’s bad tho , when you want to go drink a beer and have to look around for the empty bottle because you can’t remember if you already had one. Just having another fixes that tho …..yayahahahaya yayahahahaya.

CAMPSOUPS profile image
CAMPSOUPS in reply to Kaliber

Well you don't need none of that kind of cherry on top. Sorry to hear but maybe a little consolation to know where its coming from and that yea it wasn't a full blown stroke.Even without Xtandi getting old is in and of itself is a journey of conundrums I think.

Keep those nerve synapsis sparking though as best one can.

I use an Indica strain to sleep, if a ballgame goes into extra innings then I start eating all kinds of stuff. Works great and helps with sleep. Don't want to sleep? Use a Sativa strain

Boonster profile image

Mr. Scruffy -- thanks for identifying the strains you use and their purpose. Very useful.

spencoid2 profile image
spencoid2 in reply to mrscruffy

I tried some Indica last night and it did not seem to help with sleep. Well maybe a little. I need to make a tincture and use that instead of smoking might work better for sleep. Will try more after making the tincture.

mrscruffy profile image
mrscruffy in reply to spencoid2

This is what I do. An hour before bed I eat an edible then right before bed I smoke, the smoke gets me to sleep and the edible takes time to get into my system so it keeps me asleep

Kaliber profile image
Kaliber in reply to mrscruffy

Yes yes … you got it Toyota….😁😁😁

Kaliber profile image
Kaliber in reply to spencoid2

Well …. an edible is the way to go. Check some of my recent posts about making cannabis flour. Half to a gram of AAA flour in peanut butter will render , even the most experienced consumer ( ie: the hammer ), into a deep sleep. I’d work up to a gram , first, 1/3 1/2 etc … if it truly top drawer. Flour is concentrated bud anyway and too much may make you hide in a closet for several hours before sleep mode sets in. The down side is that it can take 1-3 hours to onset and you have to fill the interim.. usually with dabs or smoking ( vape is instantaneous ).

❤️❤️❤️

spencoid2 profile image
spencoid2 in reply to Kaliber

that sounds great, no need to make tincture etc. i have about 4 ounces of indica dominant to try with and can get a lot more. last years pot is going for $150 a pound and many people give it away :)i looked at your posts and could not find any on cannabis flour or its use in edibles. a recipe would be great, would like to try it tonight.

Kaliber profile image
Kaliber in reply to spencoid2

Yea I couldn’t find it as well. Here goes : lay out a shallow disposable aluminum baking pan and put a layer of buds or shake in it. AAA top drawer preferred but use what ever you have. Break up enough buds into the smallest pieces , removing all the stems and connector stems you can , enough buds to make an even shallow layer in the pan.

Set oven to 220f and put in the tray and bake for 40 minutes. This converts all the Psychologically inactive THA in the buds , down into psychologically active THC, making the buds edible.

Take one of those bowl shaped stainless steel mesh kitchen strainers and place it over a deep bowl …then scrub the now toasted cannabis bits back and fourth against the strainer until the buds break up and grind into tiny bits that will fall through the strainer.

You now have cannabis flour. I weigh out one gram doses into a two ounce soufflé cup , with a top cover and store those until needed. It’s a single dose for the experienced or as many as three doses for other purposes that might require socializing. I use a spoon , open up a pre-measured cup and usually take out a third to a half and put it into a second soufflé cup. Then I open a jar of peanut butter and get a dollop on a spoon and mix it into the soufflé cup with 1/3 or 1/2 g in it. Then use the spoon and eat it. It’s yummy , and a known measured amount so you can know what to expect . It all depends upon the quality of the bud as to what the results will be. Usually a full gram of almost any decent bud is all you want. With really high grade bud, you can tone it down a bit.

I fill one of those stainless kitchen seasoning shakers with appropriate sized holes , with the flour and …..maybe dust some on my spaghetti , deserts etc. for a extra little zing . Its best to be cognizant of how much you dust on food or desserts , you don’t want your guests “ couchlocked “ for two days if they don’t expect it yayahahahaya yayahahahaya. If you make the flour with killer giggle weed , it serves to be a sleep aid, social energizer , and fun party treat. Giggle weed will knock you out ( sleep ) and kill pain as easily as any strain but can be used in a wider array of applications. Guests ( or yourself ) laughing for hours is always fun.

Just my thoughts, hope this helps. The “ key “ most important activity is the “ decarboxylation “ step ( in the oven ) that activates the THC to an easily edible state.

Let me know how it turns out …. Have fun and “ no samples “ until the work is done !!! Yayahahahaya

❤️❤️❤️

Note:this process makes a “ concentrated “ cannabis product. It will quickly reduce a large pile of wonderful fragrant buds … into a rather small pile of toasted odor flour. It’s not for the faint of wallet if you are buying the buds. Also, since this activates and concentrates … it can measurably improve “ ho- hum “ buds / shake into a “ wow “ product .

spencoid2 profile image
spencoid2 in reply to Kaliber

i usually read for a while before going to sleep or listen to my player piano so there is time for the pot to work.

spencoid2 profile image
spencoid2 in reply to Kaliber

I made some flour last night and had a pretty big dose. The music was wonderful and I sort of think it did help me sleep. Will try again tonight maybe a little less.

Kaliber profile image
Kaliber in reply to spencoid2

Kewl …. I forgot to mention that you’ll probably still be stoned a bit the morning after. Lol. Its good to remember that “ flour “ has “ all “ the THC carefully activated for eating and the tiny flour particles are easily and quickly digested in the stomach which releases the THC more completely making the dose effectively more powerful than , say, old school brownies. It will be easy to decide how much is appropriate for your needs plus ,here, I make several different kinds of flour that have dramatically different effects. Maybe you can trade with your friends and toast several different strains for different effects. Different strains can provide dramatically different effects.

Keep me and us ( the other people reading this too ) posted. Have fun …

❤️❤️❤️

It helps me . With out Thc I’d have little appitite! 🍀🤙🏽

If she tries it, tell her to just go slow with a small amount and go from there. One of the "go to" strains for appetite is called Girl Scout Cookies. There's website called Weedmaps that will help you find whatever strain you want.

Cannabis is very safe stuff, nobody overdoses on it although it's not fun if you take too much. Now how do I know that?

Yes, in 2015 I went through 6 months Taxetere. First 21 day cycle I was nauseous and sick around day 8, no appetite. MO suggested pot, he was a young doc from Gainesville, a college town. Works like a charm. Never felt high, just offset pain and nausea. Stopped use after chemo.

It's also very useful for cancer pain. As was mentioned, the Indica strains don't get you high, just relieve pain and help you sleep. I've used them for cancer bone pain, to alternate between Norco (an opioid), and over-the-counter meds when I could so that I was rotating the meds and not getting a tolerance to anything. Also Norco constipates so tried to minimize that.

I went to my local dispensary (here in CA) and got some great edible gummies. They are a blend they have specifically for people who are having chemo. They are a blend of THC, CBD and another cannabinoid. They really help with the malaise and achy feeling I get for a few days after chemo. They also seem to stimulate my appetite.

Getting my Medical MJ card was one of the few benefits of cancer.

Kaliber profile image
Kaliber in reply to AlvinSD

You don’t need a card anymore unless you expect to be “ holding “ up to six pounds at a time. Even here in lowly Fresno, we have several open to the public storefronts with 9 more opening soon. One looks like a NYC art gallery inside . Nearly all the extremely large cannabis farms - producers are in the Central Valley. Utterly massive amounts are grown on licensed farms and we have a whole huge abandoned prison dedicated to indoor hydro growing yayahahahaya. We have well over 150 driveway delivery services ..Google “ tiny weeds fresno “ for an example of both a storefront and delivery service. Delivery services ask no questions and storefronts want to see your ID to prove you are an adult. They never ask for mine yayahahahaya yayahahahaya.

Cannabis is great medicine. On Oct. 3, I'll reach 50 years of medical use of cannabis. I stumbled upon it as a glaucoma med after reading of federal studies on cannabis and glaucoma at UCLA. My pressures were normal at a checkup after smoking. Today with multiple diagnoses I find it very useful for glaucoma, mood, appetite, multiple symptom relief, etc. It is my rock.

One thing she should definitely do is talk with the people at the dispensary. They really do know what they are talking about and will help guide her through the various choices. My dispensary even has a specific chemo blend.

Sometimes you want just THC to go to oblivion (near the fridge!) and sometimes THC with CBD is needed to help boost feelings of well-being while searching for that lost last can of Pringles.

Of course she can get CBD separately. You can get CBD almost anywhere now and I would encourage everyone to use the gas station sushi rule: things are best from people who deal in it all day long.

Good on you for looking out for your friend!
