Medical Marijuana--specifics

I am a PC patient. But I also have a severe spinal injury that results in severe muscle spasms. I have a MM card. I have tried RSO (Rick Simpson Oil) and that seems to vary a lot from one dispensary to another. If you folks don't mind sharing, what specific MM do you use and for what symptoms (I would prefer not having to inhale smoke, but vaping or edibles might be fine)

Cannabis is definitely good for pain.

There is reason to believe that it activates the cannabinoid receptors that prostate cancer cells have and thereby promote the growth the the prostate cancer cells.

No FDA approved trials one way or the other at this time.

Apart from Dr Myers recommendation...

There was a speaker at the last pcri conference what was speaking on the subject of supplements and healthy diets who made an observation of association between heavy cannabis use and aggressive prostate cancer.

He was intrigued when I mentioned to him that Myers had noticed the same thing.

Association is not causation, but here there is a plausible mechanism, the increased number of cannabis receptors of prostate cancer cells, and the general mechanism of action of cannabinoid systems.

It's likely that cannabinoids are either suppressing or stimulating the pca cells. And the limited evidence here is that it's stimulating them.

But hey, there are a lot of cranky old men here who insist on self medicating with cannabis while vigorously supporting the political party most virulently opposed to it's legalization, and the coverage of the more advanced and expensive treatment options.

So who am I to question their life choices.

cesanon,

I agree, some the people in most need of the FDA, Medicare, Medicaid want to defund them to save $20 off their income taxes.

Can you explain more about the spinal injury? Does it involve disc issues, e.g., herniation, prolapsed, thinning? If it is structural, than pot might help with the symptom but not with the cause. Do you have sciatica- pain going down the leg?

Arete:

2 years ago I fell hard on concrete. My neck snapped back and it wrecked my spine. I was paralyzed for the first 1-2 days. These days I am pretty much in a wheelchair as walking/balance is poor. I also have very limited use of my hands. The worst is severe/worsening muscle spasms that require strong muscle relaxers.

Did you suffer vertebrae damage, disc compression, or nerve compression? Did they fuse any vertebrae? Do they take the position that is all they can do for your structural issues? Any surgery recommended? Is traction suggested? Have you tried that?

Arete:

It appears that I had very severe spinal stenosis. I was totally unaware of that. When I fell, it all went bad.

I did have a laminectomy without fusion a year later manly because I was in danger of being paralyzed with another fall or even a hard knock to my upper back. The surgery removed that thread, but did not help any with the symptoms.

When you have stenosis, that is very hard to correct. It looks like the MDs did all they could structurally. It is possible that you might have inflammation. Here is my suggestion for that condition. Go to eBay and check out Far Infrared (FIR) heating pad. That is good for inflammation. You will only need a 30X22 size pad to work. They have either a 30 or 90 day return policy if it doesn't work. I have had good results for arthritic pain using that pad. The FIR pad uses crystals and is not just the common heating pad.

I have tried all kinds of anti inflammatories (supplements) but none worked like the FIR pad.

I live in Florida, USA and MMJ is legal here. I get a prescription every 7 months. I get a mix of CBD (cannabadiol) and THC (tetrahydrocanabinol) which relaxes my back and helps be relax my mind and body. It certainly lets me sleep.

RSO, as far as I am concerned, is "Rick's Snake Oil". My dispensary claims to have all kinds and formats of this snake oil. I use the 1:1 as it helps me relieve the pain. CBD seems to be good for that. Before that, I will start with some 16:1 snake oil as it starts the relaxation and pain relief process. If I want to read a bit more as I fall asleep, I work in a few puffs (everything is vaped - I tried drops and they weren't much better if at all.) For me, the best things are a very high THC such as GG4 or SSD and as I get to falling asleep, some GDP or 9LB. These are indicas, and seem to really help with sleep.

I still have back pains when I stand or walk for a long time. But at night, the problem is gone, along with restless legs. It does help me. YMMV. Talk with your MMJ prescriber and also your dispensor. And check out the newer books on it at your local library.

Beermaker, I'm Southeast in Florida. Have you had any experience with Trulieve or Curaleaf dispensaries?

Ssamo - The only dispensary around here is Trulieve. They seem to be bringing new products out pretty regularly, and to have a pretty wide range of options. You can see what they have at their website. I have no experience with Curaleaf. Other than the high prices and occasional outages, I am satisfied with them. It helps that they are only about 5 miles from my house.

Thanks Beermaker, the cannabis gods have blessed me 4 dispensaries within a 5 mile radius.... decisions, decisions......

You can go to leafly.com for some info about what benefits the different strains offer and what your local dispensaries have on their menus.

I generally don't respond well to pain killers. It runs in the family.

I don't use them when taking colonoscopies. If I am undergoing a procedure where it is required, I tell the anesthiologist about this and ask them to go light.

I may be a little confused on what your asking so I will share what I am doing. I have stage 4 grade 5 Pc that has spread several places. This oil is most likely my last shot as nothing else has worked, surgery, radiation, chemo or hormone. I have been using the RSO for about 2 months. I make my own it's very easy to do just takes a little time and some money up front. I have found it's easier to make the more product you have. I get about 4ml of the oil from one ounce of product so I try to wait until I have 4 ounces and then make a batch. I don't like the feeling of being high so I make mine into suppositories and the only side effect is being tired sometimes. I would be happy to give you any details on what I have learnt doing it this way.
