Hello Warriors and Caregivers. I saw my Onc yesterday in the am and I continueto be undetectable with Xtandi for 2 years now and my every 12 weeks of Lupron and xgeva. in the afternoon i had a cystoscopy due to frequent urination and burning sensation. The cystoscopy was brutal and vowed not to have that again. Immediately, the Urologist said the next treatment is TURP since my bladder has a great deal of blockade. I asked him for alternative treatment, he said none becauseof my prostate cancer. I find that hard to believe. Can you guys share some treatments in urinating better without surgery? I know there are oral meds out there such as avodart. Anyways, when I got home after the scope, I was not able to urinate. I rushed myself to ER and they put a catheter. it's discomforting but I'll take it in emptying my bladder. God bless you all.

Nick

MY spouse had issues and had the UROLIFT surgery- we had good insurance bc it is expensive but worked well.

now he pees alot and is trying to get his control again. Not bc of urolift but bc his prostate was so swollen when he was diagnosed that he went into renal failure and had to have kidney tubing for 2 yrs. then got stents in ureters and has that now and they did urolift. So as soon as they feel his ureters will not re close they are taking the stents out- prob 6 months or more. He had the stents put in around DEC I think. But the urolift worked well.

Caution when I had stents (in and out) in the past they were only good for 3 months, I heard that they can stay in for 6 months BUT not longer!!! Also each time in or out I was given an antibiotic to prevent Urinary Tract Infections (UTI). I had lots of Cipro meds.....

Nothing worse than pissing problems! I have had two TURPS done, and lately feels like things are closing up again.

May want to consider self cathing. I had to self cath for a couple of months last year and it was not that big of a deal. Much better than the pressure of not pissing or slow pissing.

If things close up for me again, I wouldn't be apposed to another TURP.

I wish you the best!

Dave

That'swhat I'm afraid of that it may require 2 procedures

Because it's a blockage medications may not work. TURP would be a good option.

Thank you Magnus. My problem is I don't want surgery

you had frequent urination and burning...what causes the burning? with frequent urination you didn't have retention....or did? otherwise, why have TURP, etc. just for incovenience of frequent urination?

in speaking with the urology nurse, I am hopeful that the catheter loosens and creates a better passage for my urine to flow better. I am praying that this is so so I can delaythe surgery.

I had a Turps which served me well for 7 years.

Welcome to my world, stage 4 here. Can’t remove the prostate. Urologist put me on catheters about a year ago, it does feel much better to have a empty bladder but I am in a constant fight with bladder infections. Good luck warrior 🙏

Larry, having this on me is so uncomfortable. I have to have it for a week to prevent clots. So far I've passed urine with it tremendously. It's a pain emptying it all the time- Nick

I’ve had an in dwelling (Foley) catheter since day one. I only wear a bag at night, tho. This is so I don’t have to get up to urinate. During the day, I put a plug in the end of it and suit up. No big deal, really.

Yes, when rockin’ the plug, I can tell when I have to urinate. No, I don’t urinate with increased frequency. If anything, it’s the opposite.

If you can walk ok (to the bathroom), then I can see no reason you have to wear a bag other than for your own convenience. Possible reasons to bag it: gaming, coding, binging GOT.

How long have you had it on?

I’ve had a catheter since mid-November 2016. I greatly feared catheters. Greatly. But when I got mine, my son had just been killed a week prior and I had not urinated for almost two days. I was undergoing organ failure and I was in grief fog extreme.

That first catheter saved my life. I have an excellent attitude about catheters. I change and order my own. I don’t outsource this to my urologist or his assistant. I took charge of what was left below the belt (had orchiectomy).

As I said before in this thread, I didn’t follow my urologists instructions and wear a bag except at night. I also refused a partial TURP. The convo went like this:

Q: Don’t you want to urinate?

A: I already do.

I had to look at my choices clearly and without letting the fear or grief cloud my judgement. I went against prevailing winds with an orchiectomy and no TURP. I will live and die with the consequences, whether good or bad.

“And that’s all I have to say about that.”

We are all different. Case in point: I've had 3 cystoscopes (two different docs) and each one was a breeze... (no pain or irritation). Could it be the Doc? Blockage? or whatever? Ask the doc when you see him/her. Take care Nickarino.....
