6 rounds of Taxotere + carboplatin.

MO oposses to icing extremities/head as it does not permit the chemo to reach those places. Will try to chew some ice to avoid stomatitis / taste issues.

Will keep you posted

Good luck and good health to all

Icing or at least wetting gloves and socks and elevation during and continuing that 3 hours after chemo. Cool, elevated toes and fingernails can preserve your feeling and nails. The feeling in your toes really helps with balance to prevent falling. In breast cancer they can rarely get metastasis at the scalp when they use scalp cooling but I've never heard about it ever happening in prostate cancer. I noticed at Kaiser they didn't even have the chairs adjusted correctly in the chemo room to elevate the head and feet and hands. The nurse was happy to adjust it ☺️.

Had alternating Taxotere and Adrimyacyn in 2004 every week. Never iced. No

problems. Tried ice chips to suck on once. Follow your MOs direction.

First timeI read of an oncologist opposing icing. Thank you for sharing. I haven’t seen studies showing it helps, just many patients have discussed it.

In British Columbia, Canada, all patients undergoing docetaxel are provided with ice mittens at no cost. There is a recognition that neuropathy in the fingers can make daily living difficult and should be prevented. I did not ice my toes and got neuropathy there. It took several months to go away. Best of luck with your treatment.

Cryotherapy works: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/299... + pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/320... . I wouldn't use it on my head in case there was cancer spreading to my brain but I just finished my third Doxie-Carbo infusion and used ice mittens provided that are like ziploc baggies with sleeves (I add waxing mitts and stuff sacks around them to keep them cooler), gel packs combined with small ice packs within insulated booties/slippers (I change the gel packs out halfway through) and also put small ice cubes in my mouth to try to preserve my taste. Before the show begins I use Hydrasense eye drops to prevent any trouble with tear ducts. Halfway through I give my eyes another shot of the drops and a follow-up when I get home. Works for me.

If icing extremities does not permit the chemo to reach those places, and MO is concerned about that, it seems to imply MO is worried about PC in fingers and toes. Makes me wonder... is PC really ever a problem in extremities, with spread of mets to bones in fingers and toes? (A quick search seem to suggest that happens mostly with lung cancer.)

I wore ice mittens and booties through all 17 of my chemos, just during infusion. No neuropathy which is what I was trying to avoid.

I have my second on Monday. My hospital automatically ices head, hands and toes. I struggled with the hand icing after 20 mins and feet after 35 mins. I have Raynaud’s disease so it was agony. I am going to try ski silk inner gloves on Monday and see if that’s better.
