My doctor is looking to switch me from Lupron vs. Firmagon. I will have been on Lupron for 12 months since my prostate removal soon. I currently receive Lupron injections every 4 months. Lupron is causing nausea most days so doctor recommended Firmagon in a couple of months. He said it works the same with less side effects, only downside is monthly injections in the abdomen and they hurt.
Is Firmagon better/worse than Lupron?

Firmagon (Degarelix) is better. Have a read of this trial. It showed significantly better long-term results with Firmagon and had people crossover to Firmagon from Lupron.

My husband has been on Firmagon for almost 3 years. Site injection pain is minimal and easily controlled by having the injections done 'properly' i.e. very slowly and at the correct angle. In fact he does them himself (says he does them better than almost anyone, lol). All the best.

During the pandemic, it's hard to argue for monthly Firmagon shots. Maybe switch to Eligard or Zoladex first to see if it causes less nausea.

Eligard is chemically the same as Lupron, but uses a different carrier - in case your nausea is a reaction to the carrier. Zoladex is the same class of drug (GnRH agonists) in case the drug itself is what is making you nauseated.
We are all different...been taken Lupron for many moons with no nausea, but alas I do have gigantic tits....

Firmagon is much more tolerable to me than Lupron. Its only the first shot(s) that are somewhat painful...but not really more so the Lupron in the buttocks! The fewer side effects are worth it. There is some swelling for a week or so, but went away.
The discomfort from the shot(s) is real...I just had my first 2 shots (for those beginning ADT) last Monday....and was in pain for 3 days. I am told it will be much less with next single dose. Be sure to get an experienced person to do injection (package says 30-60 seconds to depress the plunger)...said to make a difference in discomfort afterwards. I have had few to no side effects so far...and dropped 4 pounds. Best of luck.
I've been taking Firmagon for 16 months. If the injection is given correctly into flesh rather than muscle as per specs i.e. slowly and at 45 deg angle then you will have 2 to 3 days on some discomfort. I don't have any nausea and one in 4 injections I have had low grade 99.5 deg F fever for a day. Once it was injected partly into the abdominal muscle and that was very uncomfortable for 3 to 4 days. I don't look forward to the injections but don't feel the need to try and run away from Firmagon.

I have been on Firmagon for 5 months. The injection itself is not painful. The injection site gets irritated for a couple of days but not terribly so. My MO has been trying to switch me to Lupron since the 2nd month. The Firmagon has been doing the job and I have read that there are fewer side effects, so I have declined the switch.
I have been on Firmagon for several years. I get injected in the stomach and usually have some redness and a little burning sensation at the injection site. The discomfort is minimal and only lasts about 5 days.
