Now Dealing With a DVT Clot

About a week ago noticed my foot swelled a bit and attributed it to inactivity. But when I took a shower the thigh was swelled and tight. Contacted the MO and he immediately scheduled a Doppler of my leg. Two hours later I was getting the Doppler. Diagnosis DVT left groin area. Lesson learned don’t screw with it. I was pretty far along to a more serious problem. The solution so far is I self inject my self with Lovevenox. The good news is it working.

Good to hear that you are recovering from a potentially life threatening condition, DVT...Deep Vein Thrombosis.

DVT is formation of a blood clot in deeper veins of legs and that clot usually remains attached to wall of the vein..this causes narrowing of vein and obstructs blood flow. That lead to inflammation showing as pain and swelling . Unfortunately, sometimes this thrombus breaks away from wall of vein and start travelling in blood. Then, it can lodge in brain(causing stroke), heart (causing heart attack) or in lungs (causing lung collapse) .

Because cancer is a hyper-coagulable (clot forming) state..the risk of DVT is higher in cancer patients.

There are two main ways you can prevent DVTs:

(1) By frequently moving your legs..like in walking. If you are bed ridden and cant walk..just move your feet and legs in bed every 1 to 2 hours.

(2) Eating anti inflammatory food which keep your blood thinner....These foods are Ginger, turmeric, Onions and Garlic.

Sometimes, you might need medicines such as low dose aspirin or coumadin etc. as prescribed by doctor. In those cases ,its safer to avoid the above foods as they can double the effect of medicines increasing risk of bleeding.

You can carefully consider Nattokinase enzyme which reduces clotting tendencies. This is not a prescription it is just for your information.

Thanks for the valuable information. I really appreciate it and plan to follow it.

There are new drugs such as xarelto, apixaban, dabigatran etc which could be used to prevent DVT and VTE. They are taken by mouth and do not require any dietary changes (New Oral Anticoagulants, NOA). Coumadin requires frequent blood drawings and diet . Talk with your doctor to find out if they are indicated in your situation.

DVT could be lethal because of pulmonary embolism. One of the worst is saddle pulmonary embolism.

Strokes or heart infarctions could only happen if there is a hole in the atrial or ventricular septums. With an anatomical normal heart, venous emboli coming from the DVT go through the pulmonary circulation first and they are trapped in the lung causing the lung infarctions. If the lung infarctions are large and/or numerous they could be lethal.

Wondering if wearing compression socks would help!

Yes...compression socks help..but feet and leg movements are more effective.

Stagnant blood has greater tendency to clot.

Glad to here that it was caught in time.

Abnormal coagulation is a risk factor for anyone with cancer.

In previous posts I have mentioned that D-dimer is an invaluable test: ~zero means no clot.

& nattikinase really speeds up the breakdown of clots.

Lovenox inactivates one of the clotting factors. It does not dissolve clots. As with Warfarin, the strategy is to allow the body's plasmin to disolve the clot. Takes forever. Nattokinase has a similar structure & is relatively fast.

Once a clot has gone, a prophylactic dose of nattokinase will prevent recurrence. [IMO]

Once the lovenox is done it’s on to an oral med. what it is I’ll find out Tuesday.

Yes, I was on Lovenox for a month, with Warfarin from the start.

The ER doc was at great pains to impress on me that I should discard 30% of the Lovenox dose. My GP told me to use the whole dose. After a week he told me to double up an that. So much for precision.

Thanks to your prior posts nattokinase was the first thing I thought of with regard to DVT. I guess doctors don't like supplements so natto wouldn't be in their bag of tricks.

It is not yet in their protocols, & will not be until BigPharma has an analog.

&, according to my GP, there is nothing else that can be used prophylactically.

There is something for stroke patients, but it has to be used within a few hours of the event.

Japanese people eat Natto (fermented soy) as their food. And they live long and have much less heart attacks and strokes. I tried to eat Natto but could not handle its taste and smell..so I am staying with my Nattokinase capsule one 200 mg a day.

Good to know you’re ok Hex40

Thanks to all I’ve learned more on the subject. Myself, I’ve been on Xarelto or blood thinner pill all along for some years now due to a suspected stroke many years ago. Suspected or TIA it’s called but a CT scan showed no abnormality.

Take good care all ❤️
