The World reopens; any plans?

Twoofus profile image

My oncologist is most adamant about my continuing to shelter in place until further notice. He even includes my grandchildren in the “don’t be around them” listing.

The US is joining other parts of the world in trying to get parts of our lives back. This should be a slow process, and success is not guaranteed. There seems to be a significant listing of problems we face due to shortcomings and problems with what our country has done/not done to date. My two young grandsons have better judgement than that.

It appears I will remain at home (I do go to most doctor visits) indefinitely. At least my wife is with me: without Lupron, Zytiga, and other meds the last last few months may have been a hell of a honeymoon.

Do any of you have plans which are superior to mine.

Doug. ✌️

I'm in the middle of chemo right now, so whether the world is open or not makes little deference to me. I'm certainly not going to visit family, as they generally live within an hour of NYC. My mom's neighbor has Covid-19.

My plans are to spend as much time as health, appointments, and weather allow isolating at our property in Vermont. This does involve travel between states, but as long as the car doesn't break down there's no interaction with people.

I am somewhat of an introvert. I only appear extroverted when standing next to my wife.

in reply to tom67inMA

Heal yourself in that Vermont beauty ! Sounds like a great plan to me.nature heals us... Good luck getting through the chemo . Then a sound recovery to you shall come. Opposites attract . You’re standing together . Much power in that ..Hang in there Tom💪🤙🏽....

If you remain in at home and isolate yourself you are only delaying the unavoidable, everyone, sooner or later will be infected.

Read THE LANCET by professor Johan Giesecke:

thelancet.com/journals/lanc...

These facts have led me to the following conclusions. Everyone will be exposed to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, and most people will become infected. COVID-19 is spreading like wildfire in all countries, but we do not see it—it almost always spreads from younger people with no or weak symptoms to other people who will also have mild symptoms. This is the real pandemic, but it goes on beneath the surface, and is probably at its peak now in many European countries. There is very little we can do to prevent this spread: a lockdown might delay severe cases for a while, but once restrictions are eased, cases will reappear. I expect that when we count the number of deaths from COVID-19 in each country in 1 year from now, the figures will be similar, regardless of measures taken.

tom67inMA profile image
tom67inMA in reply to Gemlin_

Are you suggesting we should all rush out and get infected right now? At the very least that would cause quite a load spike for the health care and mortuary systems.

Infection is not unavoidable. Once the majority of the population has had the virus and is presumably immune to it, the virus will have increasing trouble spreading because of the dwindling number of vulnerable people.

Gemlin_ profile image
Gemlin_ in reply to tom67inMA

NO, we must flattening the curve with social distancing to relieve the pressure on the health care system. Please understand that we only pushes the severe cases who needs hospital care into the future. The area below the curve represents almost all humans on earth. Death toll is maybe (nobody knows) 0.1% meaning 10.000 death in Sweden, 300.000 in US.

tom67inMA profile image
tom67inMA in reply to Gemlin_

Agree with flattening the curve, disagree that it won't affect the area under the curve. The infectious dose can determine the severity of the disease, so social distancing can make some cases less severe.

I used to say that the moon is made of green cheese. After Neil Armstrong and others I can no longer say that. But I can speculate that everyone will be infected with COVID-19 . Hopefully after a vaccine I will no longer be able to say that and go to my next speculation: China was developing a biological weapon and the new virus escaped on the heel of a careless worker.

I speculate, you speculate, he speculates, we all speculate. Look at the data, not guesses about this and that.

Gemlin_ profile image
Gemlin_ in reply to jackcop

Agree, everyone speculates but some speculate better than others (an certently better than me), like Giesecke, former state epidemiologist, former Chief Scientist at the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, member of the Strategic and Technical Advisory Group for Infectious Hazards of the World Health Organization, advisor to the Public Health Agency of Sweden.

Thank's for the link. Osterholm speculates that 70% will be infected. Giesecke speculates in 100%. Not much of a duel. :)

Don't ask an RO about surgery. Don't ask a surgeon about radiation. Don't ask a cardio researcher about epidemiology.

The aim is to become immune without dying. If I delay catching it for a year, I might have a better chance of surviving until there are therapeutics and/or vaccines.

I understand what you’re saying. The total morbidity rate while covid 19 is present will be astounding. Now NY is seeing this strange form Kawasaki disease in kids. Horrifying for young families. May God have mercy on humanity!🙏

Everything is kinda distilled down to simple terms now.

The country can’t continue to go on shut down , if so everything collapses and there is no supply chain, food, etc. the economy drops into depression.. there is no country

A vast number of people live paycheck to paycheck... they are two months behind in their apartment rent, two months behind on their car and insurance payments, their health care is linked to their jobs , they have two children and can barely buy food for themselves

There is a basic baseline of infection present in the population as a whole ... one that bubbles up here and there. Self isolation has reduced that baseline to the level that medical institutions can manage it , but breaking self isolation will raise that baseline considerable as we see it now. Desperate people have to risk infection to survive total economic collapse.

That leaves us over 60 crowd with pre-existing conditions. ALL of us will be subject to dangerous high levels of toxic virus if we venture out into the public. All of us will have to stay home until a vaccine is developed or risk death.

It’s unfortunate but it’s our current reality. I have a PCa friend that says “ screw it “ I’m going to croak anyway , im going out ...I don’t care and can’t stand much more of this being in prison .

Myself , I’m fighting to stay alive, I’m staying away from the public toxic exposure ... I’ll just have to wait until a vaccine comes along , if it does and if I live long enough to see it.

I totally agree with Nalakrats. PLEASE do not infect this forum with partisan politics, that's not what we're here for. Just turn on your TV and you'll get your fill of it in minutes, if that's what you're after. Also, consider that by insulting the intelligence of our brothers who may not agree with you politically, you make it more likely that they will ignore your posts in the future, even when you have something useful to say.

I presented a real and important issue which everyone here will need to address. I believe it needed to be brought up.

If my post is offensive to others, I do apologize. I wish everyone the best as you continue your struggles against prostate cancer.

It is very difficult.

I would just say that if advanced PCA had a cure rate north of 98% we would all be thrilled.

What we really need to know is what is the actual fatality rate is so we can gauge the actual risk. If the number of people who had it is like 8x-10x higher than those who were sick enough to get tested, things fade into background risk sort of status.

I'm also going to continue quaranting. I started when we were assured that cv wasn't serious. My doctor told me that if I got cv I wouldn't "do so well".

In hopes that this might help someone make decisions I'll add that older people generally don't fare as well against covid as younger people. Throw in cancer and any drugs that might overly tax the body and the risk goes up. How high? I don't know but could be getting close to 100%. So, even if we discount the incidence of covid to the incidence of the flu (I've heard a lot of that - died down considerably the last month), we have a rather high risk of catching a deadly virus.

By the way, I'm 57 and if you didn't know I had cancer you'd look at my blood metrics and general appearance and would likely conclude that I'd live to 100. But my doctor doesn't think any of that would help if I got covid.

I'm only going out for groceries and to play sport until my lymphocytes recover from radiation tx-- now at ALC 500, hoping to get back to 850 (LLN) by end of year. Until then, no traveling on planes or crowded spaces. I feel strong enough to survive CoV, but don't want to try it-- don't like what I'm seeing of damage to epithelial linings in blood vessels and risk of stroke or permanent lung damage. We've been through enough with PCa, don't need the extra burden of CoV.

HE IS 100% CORRECT. We cannot put ourselves at risk to get this virus, because in many cases, this will prove fatal. Our immune systems have already been compromised and many of us do not have the extra energy and ability to handle another battle.

SO, STAY SAFE, STAY AWAY FROM PEOPLE, WEAR A MASK AND GLOVES WHEN YOU SHOP, SPEND AS LITTLE TIME AS YOU HAVE TO WHEN YOU GET FOOD ETC.

We will get through this boys, so patience is the key. Read lots, watch movies, take up cooking, work out as best as you can, keep your mind and body going.

Just keep doing what I have, I am an essential part time worker, planning a major landscaping in my back yard. The grass does like it there, the weeds love it so with myroomate we built 4 2x8x2 foot raised garden beds for veggies. Also planted raspberry and black berry bushes, have tomatoes seeds for a couple of dozed plants. I discovered how heavy the bags of soil was, put them on top of the fence then cut the end and into the container went the soil. Planning on squash, cucumbers, broccoli, eggplant and peppers. The exercise is good but once the temps go up i retreat to the house, the lupron coupled with warm weather really makes you sweat.

Nothing wrong with your bringing it up, and no need to apologize. You have to make a decision for yourself, and you should be able to discus that decision here. The total number of infected may (or may not) be the same in the the end whether we quarantine or not, but the total number of dead will almost certainly be higher if we don't quarantine and our health care system gets overwhelmed . And it won't just be more dead from the virus--people will not be able to get ICU beds, or ventilators for any condition if the system is overwhelmed, or treatment for anything if too many health care workers get infected at once. I intend to do my bit to help delay my own infection and to help delay the infection of others. I'm living a healthy, satisfying life right now, and I haven't survived (so far) two cancers and ten other surgeries of varying degrees of seriousness to go down to this virus if I don't have to.

This is a very tough time and the future is very uncertain for everyone. Human nature can be to hoard, to fiercely protect and expect the worst from others and this is not without precedent. However, I see what we are going through as the potential for an historic paradigm shift because we are all now so interdependent around the globe. Red, blue, white, brown or green is irrelevant, unless we want to separate ourselves from one another and fight to see who comes out on top.

This is especially not the time for that, regardless of what we may think is unjust. People and states have shared ventilators, PPE, thank you cards and money all around the country, so we should focus on the good that many people have done and continue to do, no matter geographics or politics.

This is an opportunity to see the larger picture of how relying on each other can pull us up out of the abyss that led us here. Caring for our neighbors near and far, providing everyone with what they need could sew the seeds of a new economy. Farmers might even be able to find new ways to sell their crops and butcher animals for food banks, as an example.

Recently, Ireland returned a gift to the Navajo people in their current time of need, that was given to Ireland during the potato famine. The Navajo Nation gave them of $174 around 1878. Ireland gave the Navajo people $1.8 million dollars to help them buy supplies to deal with COVID-19! That is an amazing thing and an an example of how each person's or group's generosity for those in need can mean so much.

Personally, I want to continue to have video chats with my family and friends and give money where I can to those who need it more than me. That gives me both happiness and meaning, as I wait to emerge into the sunlight one day to hopefully find a job, meet with friends and all the rest of it.

Even if I don't get that chance, I want to do all I can now in this moment to be close to family and friends and help others until I am unable to do so. Looking out for and assisting others in need, in a time of a health and economic crisis however I can, makes me happy and is actually a gift to myself.

I hope we do come out of this mess with a broader perspective about what is truly important. I wish everyone good health and a soft landing!

I plan on continuing to enjoy my life albeit carefully, and avoid situations that would put me at risk. But I can still spend time outdoors enjoying the beach, the lake, and the ocean. I’m one or two PSA tests away from having to undergo treatment that wouldn’t allow for that so I’m not going to waste a single day since I’m not sure how many I have left. I’m already to the right hand side of the median.

With possibly 3 strains of the virus being detected.....I will continue to take precautions...and avoid direct contact until we get a better idea of what this is and what it is not. There may be no return to the world really opening. Embrace new realities and new opportunities.

Our friends 37 year old son just died from this. No underlying conditions. He just got married last September. His family is devastated. We have not left our house since March 8th. When the kids come here, we all wear masks and stay outside 6 feet apart. My daughter just had a baby 2 weeks ago. We went out to her house and looked at the baby through the window. I want to make sure my husband and I are alive to pick that baby up someday. Everyone stay safe.

People will have to work sooner or later, the devil is in the details. Hopefully mutual cooperation makes it safer. Herd immunity and a vaccine are a ways away.

I go to the store, my shop, Costco, take many walks etc, always wear a face mask around people. Almost everyone around me is respectful of the new reality. We had some crazy storm clouds yesterday, so I ran downtown (DC) to take some pics of the capitol, looked end of the world-ish.

It's tough! If this goes on for very long, some of us will not make it to see the end and experience the return of freedom to visit family and friends.

In my case because of PCa, life expectancy could be a matter of months, not years. So if we continue quarantining at home like we are doing right now, I may never see our daughter and our little grandchildren again. Even of I don't get the coronavirus.

Can't win. Either way, it sucks.

Since I was ready to retire in April this is all worked out for me of course being in Texas and New Mexico I can either be around a lot of people or nobody. I believe this pandemic has shown that we all have a pressure point take the people in Michigan who arm themselves and I really think if it got down to it we would all do that rather than be led like sheep to the slaughter good health to all stay in if you have to me I'm headed to the pot shop peace Brothers

It’s a good time in my opinion to error to caution. I like your dr. ‘S thinking. The first year is like getting hit with bat in the head . You should adjust in time. But it’s a hell of a ride. I’m 5 yrs in with APC and marriage. M wife we’d met with tubes out of my back and a foley . Both for a year and a half. What honeymoon? Her love saved my life. I’m happy that you have love too at home. APC is a brutal rollercoaster from

a-z.. “ The plans of mice and men”” I didn’t plan for a catastrophic disease to take me down at 53 yrs old. I can tell you that for sure. Now at 59 ive settled into the new norm of diminished capacities with appreciation that I’m even here at all. Live with gratitude. Things can get better. But they also can get worse . The old carpe diem or “pluck the day “ Be well!

FACE MASKS:

Should We All Be Wearing Face Masks? Here's Why Experts Are So Conflicted

PAUL GLASZIOU & CHRIS DEL MAR, THE CONVERSATION 9 APRIL 2020

Should members of the public be wearing face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic? It's a controversial question, with different countries and authorities giving different advice.

We have reviewed the results of more than a dozen randomised trials of face masks and transmission of respiratory illnesses. We found the current best evidence suggests wearing a mask to avoid viral respiratory infections such as COVID-19 offers minimal protection, if any.

Conflicting recommendations

Two of the world's major health organisations disagree on mask wearing. The World Health Organisation (WHO) currently discourages mask use:

There is currently no evidence that wearing a mask (whether medical or other types) by healthy persons in the wider community setting, including universal community masking, can prevent them from infection with respiratory viruses, including COVID-19. <==<<<

WHO does recommend special masks (N95 masks or equivalent) plus other protection for health-care workers working with people who have, or are suspected to have, COVID-19.

By contrast, the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States has recently recommended everyone wear a (cloth) mask.

However, this is to prevent infected people passing on the infection, not to prevent the wearer getting infected. <===<<<

No. My brother in law was a 24/7 motorcycle associate. President of a local chapter of something long ago. The parties were loud. He tore his family apart and passed 2 years ago. Ten years younger than me. Crank will do that. Another very good friend was dying last I saw him. Heroin and the needle will do that. A couple of other very good friends passed from the needle. I didn't like needles and did not participate. Now I'm stuck with needles all the time. How ironic.

One of my past long time ex girlfriends married the president of a minor “ club “ in Orlando back in the mid 60s . Eventually he offered me 15 minutes in their “ parts “ warehouse to come and take her back yayahahahaya yayahahahaya. I used to send him one of those novelty shop fake piles of dog doo in a brown paper bag , every year, for his anniversary. We were never “ friends “ per se “ ... they were eventually “ absorbed “ and he always resented that.

You don’t have to be a one percenter to see drug abuse out of control and the damage it brings. One look around town ,here, is all that takes. In the brotherhood, you are married to the club first and foremost. Families, sadly, take a distant back seat. Back in the mid 60s , my chapter of ”enthusiasts “ decided to make a dramatic change of direction in their activities .... That was the end of my interest there. It was a difficult and sad decision, but not for me. In my early 20s I was into raising hell and having fun ... period. I still wish I could find my first wife and apologize to her for being the person I was back then and the way I treated her. I’ve always regretted that chapter of my life. A year ago , I sold my final bike, a ‘06 stage 2 Dyna Super glide custom ... my ( 4th ) wife bought it for me for my 60th birthday. Still makes me sick that I let it go. First time in my adult life I don’t own a hog. Times change I guess, we all have to change with them to get by. Whatever ...

This post was altered due to my reference to how the federal government may distribute funds to the states to help with severe economic problems. Why was this done?

Is there a “rules” list which contains the prohibited topics? I understand this is a site devoted to advanced prostate cancer, but sometimes the activities and debates in DC have a direct impact on us, our treatments, and our lives. I believe my post did this.

Great site but I’m not interested in my thoughts being censored out of the blue and off the site.

I guess it’s a matter of perspective and appreciation. When you are laying in the corner alone, powerful cancer drugs poisoning your body and your brain, trying to fight off pave mets and death ... someone kind enough to pay enough attention to you to edit your post is warm friendly brotherly attention . How nice is it that someone out there is listening to you , helping your puzzle pieces mesh with all the other pieces here , that’s pretty kewl from my own perspective . ....yayahahahaya yayahahahaya. Wow ...

Just say’in 😂😂😂😂

Sounds like you haven’t hit the slick spot on the pole yet, where you slide down more and your thoughts Naturally turn more inward / personal / introspective ... and you finally realize that nothing going on “ out there “ is ever going to be relevant in your life anymore. Not ever. I guess that’s a good thing tho .... good for you for still thinking “ all that “ matters. Hang onto that thought for long as you can brother. If you are a stage 4 croaker, all that will change dramatically, eventually.

Well I'm sorry to hear that you have to tolerate another Zometa treatment, but I'd rather post to you then post about you. Well thank you brother ... lots of post skullduggery takes place in these parts ... I never know day to day yayahahahaya. It’s all good. I’ve had 16 - 18 Zometa infusions now ... you’d think I’d get used to them, but I never quite do. Still I strongly want them, I know they are helping my extensive met load and adt bone depletion a whopping lot.

I’d much rather that you post to me than about me too buddy yayahahahaya ya. Absolutely. You get to thinking that Lupron + Xtandi are bad ( and they surely are ) , but then along comes a Zometa infusion and puts things back into perspective. yayahahahaya yayahahahaya.
