Abstract

T cells demand massive energy to combat cancer; however, the metabolic regulators controlling antitumor T cell immunity have just begun to be unveiled. When studying nutrient usage of tumor-infiltrating immune cells in mice, we detected a sharp increase of the expression of a CrT (Slc6a8) gene, which encodes a surface transporter controlling the uptake of creatine into a cell. Using CrT knockout mice, we showed that creatine uptake deficiency severely impaired antitumor T cell immunity. Supplementing creatine to WT mice significantly suppressed tumor growth in multiple mouse tumor models, and the combination of creatine supplementation with a PD-1/PD-L1 blockade treatment showed synergistic tumor suppression efficacy. We further demonstrated that creatine acts as a "molecular battery" conserving bioenergy to power T cell activities. Therefore, our results have identified creatine as an important metabolic regulator controlling antitumor T cell immunity, underscoring the potential of creatine supplementation to improve T cell-based cancer immunotherapies.

I am on about month 10 of Lupron +Z+P. I lift weights 3 times a week and have been able to maintain most of my strength but my arms have become the arms of a skinny 12 year old. In your opinion would creatine be a good thing to add?

I think this is a two-fer: help conserve muscle mass while building up immunity. I have sent a copy of the article to my MO to see whether or not their might me a downside, at least for my particular situation.

What did your ammo have to say?

Hi George,

He offered no objections. Actually, it was my own concerns that led me to not take it. My two concerns are (1) it would increase my blood creatinine which is a measure of kidney function--in other words taking creatine might mask a kidney problem (Creatinine clearance (CrCl) is the volume of blood plasma cleared of creatinine per unit time. It is a rapid and cost-effective method for the measurement of renal function. Both CrCl and GFR can be measured using the comparative values of creatinine in blood and urine. Glomerular Filtration Rate.); (2) I am 81, what results can I seriously look forward to? Going to the gym, up until now, three times a week was sufficient to maintain functional strength, anything else, I have my weight-training son to assist.

Make sense. Thanks K. My creatinine test came back today. It was on the lowest possible number in the normal range. Thus, I think I have some leeway room to take 5mg a day and see how it goes. I need a little more iron and zinc too. Good that you and your son are working out together. Nice.

Thanks for the reply. I will probably pass on it for now. Taking enough stuff already.

Ahh, creatine (AKA "Krebiozen")--I'm getting a flashback to my youth!

Has anyone discovered any new info on adding creatine? Will it change a1c and blood glucose levels? Did the MO have an opinion? Is anyone using while on adt?

Nalakrats, do you see any issue with taking creatine while on ADT?
