Why is my Dad’s Vitamin B12 levels so high?

He is not taking any supplements with Vitamin B12 and is not eating foods in excess that contain the vitamin. His vitamin b12 level is 1,300(+). They never check this during his normal labs but yesterday, I asked if they would check it this time along with vitamin D levels. He just finished his 10 rounds of chemo 4 weeks ago and is only taking his daily 10mg of steroids. His PSA is currently 57.......What could be causing this high reading of b12? I did find an article that stated “high reading of vitamin b12 was an indication of increased morbidity”

Can anyone shed some light??

Thank you!

How are his liver enzymes? Maybe it's from breakdown of liver tissue?

They told us his liver levels were good.

including LDH?

They need to check if the results are correct. If there is a B12 over 900 , they have to work up for liver disease, and for hematological diseases including leukemia, polycythemia etc.

Totally sucks:(

Thanks for the reply. Kim

You just reminded me. Mine was greater than 2000 and as of 1/1/2019 was 1700. My doctor said it’s very high but never suggested anything or took any action. I wanted to look into it more but never did and now I am getting nervous about it. I think my liver numbers were ok. With everything going on with PC stuff like that gets ignored or not paid attention to. I am going to call my dr tomorrow to check it further.

On a second thought, I did an abdomen ct scan and whole body MRI. would these tests show any damage to the liver if it’s damaged?

My dad had abdominal CT done too and had another schedule March 4th. They have said his liver numbers are fine. The info I have found about high vitamin b12 levels online, points to things to do with liver. I dont know but I dont want to let this go. I saw on another forum (pernicious anemia forum) that Vitamin C May cause b12 numbers to increase. My dad does take that everyday. I’m going to suggest that he stop taking it. I’ll update with the March 4th results. Please let me know if you find out anything from your medical team. Thank you for responding to my post. Best wishes! Kim
