In my last post I was about to run a half marathon. How did it go? I beat my time in the same race from 2009! 10 years older, on Lupron + Xgeva + Abiraterone + others, and not quite 7 months since my last chemo infusion. Not my fastest ever half marathon, but not my slowest either.
For those who are newly diagnosed, don't lose hope. There's every chance treatment will work fantastically well!
No back sign yet, but hope to become more of an activist going forward. Need weight bearing exercise for my ribs and back, but this may explain why my legs have no mets.
Good for you brother, you are an inspiration to the rest of us ( freak yayahahahaya) . I generally struggle with shuffling from my couch to the bathroom and back ( lead legs ). I have to get let out at a special door at Kaiser and then still have to take a couple breaks trying to get to the clinics and back. Profuse sweats , extreme exhaustion , red faced gasping for breath and staff following me around to make sure I’m ok yayahahahaya yayahahahaya. Running a marathon seems so otherworldly... incomprehensible almost.
I wish I could just walk semi normally, I’d be happy with that for now. Being able to run like you can do must be wonderful.... how kewl for you . 💪💪💪 👍👍👍
A year ago I was laying on the floor of the oncologist's office because I was in too much pain to sit. A week later I had a catheter. During chemo I got out of breath putting clothes on. My recovery is at least as much luck as anything else.
Keep doing what you can do, and we'll all hope that somebody finds a treatment that works well for everybody.
Roger that brother Tom ... well I get out of breath putting my clothes on too. Yayahahahaya. It’s a big deal to get dressed.
My treatment is successful, my bugs are asleep right now, the cure keeping them that way is the problem. Yayahahaha yayahahahaya. Oh well, ..... my wife likes to say it’s way better than the alternative. Easy to say when it’s not you .
Welp for sure you are an example of what could or might be .... it’s something to look towards as uplifting possibilities.
Great job.....for all those who want do something to fight the monster running may not be in the cards...for me a former line backer and 5'10" 200lbs and no fat, running has never been my best suit...I do jog , lift, paddle board , play pickle ball, golf, but I felt I was lacking in Cardio.....so last week I brought in a Peloton.....I love it ....I am sweating my ass off and my legs feel 30 yrs younger..So Tom is a great runner and he has his way to keep the monster at bay....Come on every one and move.....do not let sit on your ass and let this stuff catch us...I am on Lupron and Xtandi ....with exercise I have no fatigue....so lets go!!!! Again great job on the race ! Keep us informed as it shows what we can do if we want too !!!!!!
Thanks! but I'd never call myself a great runner as I'm not gifted with any natural speed. Not everyone can or wants to run, and that's fine. My key point is that people shouldn't automatically assume they can't do things just because they have cancer or treatment side effects.
Exercise in any form is the best thing you can do to fight cancer outside of medical treatments, IMHO. Your variety of activities is a better model to follow than my single minded obsession with running
Great job!! Especially beating your time from 10 years ago! I too am a great believer in exercise. I am on Lupron and Zytiga and in my 5th week of salvage radiation. I do aerobic stuff and lift weights 3 days a week and swim a mile 2 other days. No fatigue except a little a by Friday evening after the week of radiation. Keep up the fight!
Very inspiring Tom. Congrats on the results and even more so on your ability to train and fuel yourself over the months leading up in order to compete !
I was going to swim an extra 20 lengths in honor of your triumph yesterday but I succumbed to a norolike virus...just getting out of the bed after 36 hrs of pure hell.
I’ll catch up tomorrow Tommie and try to fulfill my pledge......Burp
