I recently helped out at the Wapack trail race by setting up a water stop. As a cancer patient, it says a lot about how I'm doing when healthy people call me up and ask for my help.

Read your latest blog entry, what pace are currently running at and what time are you aiming for in the October half?

Depends on the distance. I ran a few 5Ks this summer at a 9-ish pace, sub 28 minute finishing time. I just did a 10 mile run on a cool morning in under 2 hours.

I'm aiming for 2:23:something in the half. I don't have the exact number handy, but it's the time I ran in the same race 10 years ago when I was a new and inexperienced runner. It works out to about an 11 minute pace. Very doable if I can get a little more endurance and some decent weather on race day. Of course, it will be about two weeks after getting Lupron and Xgeva shots to make it even more fun.

I've never been a fast runner unless I'm sprinting after a frisbee. Abiraterone is not normally associated with improved speed and endurance, but that seems to be happening in my case. Less cancer and a lower body weight seems to be a bigger factor than the side effects. Not going to win any races at this pace but I shouldn't be last in my age group either.

It's probably the prednisone your taking with the zytiga that's giving you an energy boost. It did for me. Good luck.

I definitely get an energy boost from the prednisone, and probably less inflammation as well. But, I'm seeing a trend of faster paces with the same or lower heat rate, which implies no treatment induced anemia. I'll be very curious to see my blood counts in October.

I chart all my runs, time, distance, pace, weather, etc. I also chart all my weight lifting, pounds, reps, sets, etc. I have years of charts compiled. One thing I did notice that approximately 6 months after I finished my chemo treatments, my lifting strength and my running pace improved. Coincidence? I have yet to start Zytiga so I can't predict if Prednisone factors in.

It's great to meet another running data nerd. 8-) I'm approaching 6 months since chemo, perhaps that explains it.

Just a theory, I can't say for certain but "everything" improved physically.
