Planning to run a half marathon to celebrate the anniversary of my diagnosis, but have to deal with joint pain and the associated paranoia to get there.

10-ish Month Update
Congratulations Tom...you are going to celebrate anniversary of diagnosis soon.
WE do not have to prove anything to any one. .we just have to do what is best for our health.
Running is high impact and puts more pressure on joints and ligaments..causing damage.
For us..whose joints are vulnerable to damage..it is better to have rhythmic, brisk walk ..minimizing the impact ….it prevents joint damage if done properly. Good Luck
...or swim laps. Zero impact, good cardio workout. Since I cannot run anymore (I completed one marathon about 20 years ago) this is my go-to aerobic exercise.
I'm far from ready to give up running. It's the best mood boost I know of, it encourages strong bones, and it stresses the body's ability to deliver oxygen.
If running is done properly and in combination with other exercises, joint damage generally isn't a problem. I tend to run faster than I can sustain, then skip strength and flexibility work, setting myself up for problems.
In short, I have to stop acting like a healthy 25 year old
Never stop being a kid .
You got this, take it slower and just completing that 1/2 is an F'in accomplishment.
You know what I'm going thru with my ADT induced anemia - runs/hikes at elevation are taxing.
Had a patient last week tell me that I looked younger! Ha , maybe having hair/tan helped
The Monday after the Long Beach marathon 10/12/2014 is when I had a PSA @ 555.2, then 10 days later 677.3. DX in 01/2015 @ 840.
Gonna do LB marathon again this Oct and celebrate my 5 year survival with Stage IV PCa (old data said only 28%). That's also my motivation to do the #caminofrances , also to place blue ribbons along the way.
Rock on/Fight on Brother!
Randy
I have the best tan I've had in years, or maybe it's better to say the only tan in years. I've also been told I have a young person's hair now. My appearance is very much at odds with having any disease.
Best of luck with the LB marathon! When you reach 10 years I'll fly out there and run it with you!
Great that you are planning on the half marathon, and it motivated me to do the same. I last ran one about 9 years ago, and decided now to train for one. My plan is to build up my endurance on an all motion trainer, like the precor at my ymca. So far up to 60 minutes with 800 calories burned but can barely walk after that. Good luck to you!!
Glad to hear, keep at it! The real benefit is in the training before the race. The race itself is just the carrot.
Make sure you break two hours.
I sympathize. When in my 40's I ran four full marathons. I'm now 77 and recommend a 20 MG Oxycodone before the race. It will eliminate joint pain AND any associated paranoia.
Starting on my 4 th year now. Joint pain in hands is a real pain , still hurts in my Mets areas. As it’s time for my monthly checkup this morning I have this great big lump in my gut. Anxiety builds for this every 28 day checkup. Hate it but all was well last checkup so here we go again.
Thanks for sharing, I'd say you're an example that pain doesn't mean progression, whew! I know the lump you're talking about. The only defense I know of is to get so cocky that you believe good test results are pre-ordained. I used to psych myself up for chemo infusions by imagining myself as a skinnier version of Hulk Hogan, running into the "ring" (infusion room), tearing off my T-shirt, and asking the cancer "What ya gonna do when docetaxel runs wild on you?"
You do the first half of the half marathon.... I'll do the last half....
Good Luck, Good Health and Good Humor.
