Saffron and treatment of prostate cancer?

I was searching for herbs that can suppress appetite, because since my starting Firmagon injections my appetite increased and of course my weight too. I found an article about using Saffron as an appetite suppressant AND also as an antidepressant, but I also found another article about the possible anticancer effects of this amazing herp.

# The effect of saffron was examined on five different prostate cancer cell lines and two normal prostate cell lines. In the five cancer cell lines, saffron reduced the growth of the cells. The higher the dose and the longer the treatment, the more the cancer cells were stopped from growing. Additionally, saffron had no effect on the growth of normal prostate cell lines, highlighting the safety of this spice.

## Saffron plant contains 150 chemicals, among which carotenoids can be mentioned, such as crocin, which is known as an anticancer agent. Crocin is another carotene that is responsible for the color of saffron and affects the function of four cancer cells:

1) Inhibition of nucleic acid synthesis

2) Enhances antioxidant system to reduce oxidative stress

3) Inducing apoptosis to promote cell death

4) Inhibits the growth of signal paths

Other compounds found in saffron include safranal and picocrocin, which are responsible for the saffron smell and taste, respectively, but it should be noted that crocin and crocidine carotenoids have anti-oxidant, anti-cancer and anti-mutagenic properties compared to other metabolites found in The plant is saffron.

Various experiments in animal and cell models have shown that the use of saffron in mice during a two-week period accompanied by a decrease in the size and number of cancer nodules has been associated with a decrease in the level of oxidation and cell apoptosis. In another study, the antitumor effect of the saffron extract on skin cancer in mice was due to increased survival, avoidance of weight loss, delayed tumor incidence and reduced their number.

An interesting point in the properties of saffron is that the use of this plant can prevent DNA damage from radiotherapy done in cancer patients. On the other hand, according to available evidence, no evidence of tissue damage or blood coagulation has been reported due to the use of saffron, and is likely to be safe for many people, except in certain groups such as pregnancy and lactation, people with bipolar disorder, allergic and People with low blood pressure.

I ordered capsules will try it for 1 month to see if it will supress my appetite and also to improve my mood. We will never know if this will slow down the PCa as for me I am using more than 15 types of supplements daily and will start "Fenbendazole" with gamma E, curcumin and CBD drops next week.

Ralph,

Do you mind sharing list of your 15 supplements ?

First thing to mention before posting what I use is that you have to double check these supplements side effects and also take the risk using them WITH what ever is your current PCAa therapy (Radiation, ADT, etc), or medications (DM, HTN, blood thinner, etc) as they MAY interfere with these medications and cause serious health problems.

Other than metformin, statin, aspirin, losartan (blood pressure medication), Firmagon monthly (last injection this month) my suppliments are: Neem, Berberine/origon grap, L-arginine, vitamin D3, vitamin B1, vitamin K, Nitokinase, ginkgo biloba, rodeola rose, broccoli sprouts, modified citrus pictin, probiotics, american gensing, milk thistle, Boswella (COX2 inhibitor).

Before using any of these supplements please ask your health care provider.

Ralph,

Boswellia inhibits the pro-inflammatory enzyme 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX).

Agree with you. Instead of taking expensive Celibrex which may cause arrhythmias, we can use Boswellia. Here is an article of COX -2 inhibitorin effect of Boswellia.

[Why You Should Be Taking Boswellia Instead of NSAIDs]

Ibuprofen and naproxen block prostaglandins, a natural protein in the body. In response to injury, COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes release prostaglandins, which cause inflammation, swelling, fever, and increased pain. NSAIDs like aspirin, naproxen, and ibuprofen block both COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes.

Long used in Ayurvedic medicine, Boswellia serrata extract comes from the resin of the Boswellia plant. Studies conclude that Boswellia serrata extract reduces inflammation in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee as effectively as a popular NSAID COX-2 inhibitor drug. Additional studies show that the anti-inflammatory properties of Boswellia can be effective in addressing rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, and inflammatory bowel disease.

Thanks for the list. We are just exchanging ideas. We are not promoting use of these supplements to anyone. Responsibility of use always belongs to one who decides to use them.

I do use many of the same things you mentioned. I use many in their natural form. In morning I go to my backyard and pluck 7 leaves of Neem and chew them.. then, a glass of green tea and thereafter, I chew a 3 inch long piece of fresh Ginger root.

This is my morning ritual

In place of metformin I take Berberine...In place of statin ,I take Re d Yeast Rice..in place of probiotic ..I take a big cup of homemade fat free Yogurt.

Turmeric(curcumin) ,Boswellia ..I take both in food as well as in capsule form.

Is there any study which shows that blood pressure medicine. .Losartan help in slowing prostate cancer progression ?

I will have to ask my research doctor if saffron is allowed while I am on this drug trial.

Hi Magnus,

The problem with those herbal suppliments is the dosage and the time it takes to work.

I usually read reviews on Amazon from people who used these supplements. I see that Saffron helps improving the mood and also suppressing appetite which we all need while on ADT therapy.

The quality of the product and dosage/lenght of using are important factors in my opinion.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind.

In the case for Saffron, what doses and frequency are being employed?

Ralph1966 profile image
Ralph1966 in reply toRamp7

I started 88.25 mg (one capsule) twice daily today.

Almost all brands on Amazon has this dose per each capsule

The exact dose is mentioned here:

Answer:

The typical dose used in the studies of saffron versus Alzheimer’s, versus PMS, and versus depression was indeed 30mg. Each flower yields 7mg dried saffron, and I think there are 3 stigmas per flower, so 30mg should be about 13 threads (which is typically how it’s sold in the store). But even less may have a physiological effect .
