Frequent Night time Urination

I get up about 5-8 times a night to urinate. Have been on Lupron for three years for matastic Prostate Cancer. Is there a medication I can take to stop this . Tried Flow Max but doesn’t work . I think it’s a over active bladder not an enlarged prostate. Any suggestions folks ?

There are many meds for bladder spasms. Ask your Uro what samples he has so you can try them and find which works for you. Some guys in my support groups have used Vesicare, Myrbetriq, and oxybutynin.. There are many more.

I just asked my urologist about this. He said that Flomax can help if the problem is caused by inflammation of prostate tissue around the urethra. However it can also be caused by irritation of the bladder. He said there are no drugs for that. He said the bladder is not full but it's still sending signals to the brain that it is full and needs to empty. I don't know if I believe him but he said you want to try to hold off as long as you can and train your brain to distinguish between when you really have to go and when it just seems like you have to go and the urge soon passes.

I've been trying to do that but it's a lot easier to do during the day than at night.

One treatment that works for me though the urologist had never heard of it is to take two ibuprofen just before going to bed. If I do that I may sleep for as much as 6-8 hours before having to urinate. If you try that, try one pill (200 mg) as well as two. It's always better to use a minimum dose if it works.

Another thing I recommend is to keep a jar with a tight fitting lid (and a roll of toilet paper) by the bed. It can be less disruptive to sleep to sit up, piss into a jar, and lie down again as compared to walking to the bathroom and back.

If someone has a better answer I'd love to hear it too.

I keep a 40 ounce hard plastic cup on the nightstand. Roll over, pee and back to sleep in 30 seconds! Works great for me. If I get up I lose more sleep.

An overactive bladder has a mind of its own. Training it doesn't work for me. Problem is muscle contraction causes high pressure in the bladder. I am drier when I go often during the day. See the Tall one's advice. Oxybutenin (often sold as Ibuprofen) is an old but effective med but causes dry mouth. It is available in a skin patch that doesn't do this. A newer med that I am just trying is mirabegron, sold in Australia as Betmiga. Frequency goes hand in hand with poor sleep. If you can get to a stable sleep state, less urine is produced but if you are half awake, it just keeps flowing, a vicious cycle. So also address any sleep issues. I take a 10mg melatonin before bed and also when I go for a piss at night, it helps get back to sleep. I am wary of sleeping tablets which carry a risk of addiction or at least reduced effectiveness over time.

2 mg Clonazapam and 20 mg melatonin at bed time ,Good for 5hrs. for me. Cyclobenzaprine 10 mg and ibuprofen after piss. Works for me...Cyclobenzaprine is actually for my back pain, but combo works for sleep. Good luck. Megace 10mg 4 times a day helps with hot flashes that used to wake me up.

Your problem may not be bladder spasms but a weakening of the sphincter. You might try imipramine.

I take whole leaf cannabis oil at bed time and it reliably gets me through the night without getting up. Without it I might have, 1, 2 or 3 trips. When i take it earlier in the day it greatly reduces frequency and improves my stream. I too am taking Lupron.

What is whole leaf cannabis oil? Just what it sounds like I assume, but is there a brand, specific strength, dosing? Thanks.

Whole leaf oil refers to all oil soluble ingredients extracted from whole bud. It contains both THC, CBD, terpines (and probably pesticides). My extract is homemade based on what leaf is available, but I can tell you for sure that the effect stands up across material purchased in Canada, USA and Mexico.

My husband is careful about is not taking anything that is a diuretic in the evening or at night. Reishi - is a diuretic.. we did not know this at first and were using to help him relax at night. We stopped this. Recently I bought him Dr. Schulze's Prostate Formula. his url is herbdoc.com - We are still evaluating it. He thinks it helps a little.. If you need something to help you sleep Dr Schulze's Nerve formula is decent.

I hope you find something that helps. When my sweetie has bad nights he is really tired the next day.

Prayers and Hugs!

I use Myrbetriq. It does not stop nighttime urination but helps a lot.

As I've posted before, when it was long enough I used to tie it in a knot, then when it shrunk I used to use a cork.... now I just sleep in the bathtub...

I have similar numerous night time urination needs. They seem to be tied directly to my hot flashes. These have come on after starting Lupron and Zytiga about 4 months ago, and no reduction yet! About every 45 minutes to an hour, I stir or roll over in my sleep, which triggers a hot flash, so I throw the covers off and turn on a fan. Shortly there after it seems my bladder sphincter relaxes and I have a sudden intense urge to pee. If I contract my Kegal muscle soon enough, I can sometimes overcome the urge but not always. By then I am sweating profusely, and the walk to the bathroom helps that by exposing both sides of my body to cooling air, and giving my bed sheets a couple minutes to evaporate. During the day it is not so bad as I am awake and can stop flow into the urethra more quickly, but even then it is definitely connected to onset of a hot flash. I believe that if I could get a handle on the hot flashes that wake me, my urgent need to urinate could be managed.

Any one else have that direct tie to hot flashes, then causing urgency? I'd love to hear suggestions so maybe I can get some quality sleep.

Astounding that this could be root cause of frequent night time urination fo many, instead drugs or surgery are recommended by medical professionals, before trying a very simple food elimination diet to determine if certain foods,,,acidic or spicy,,,are the problem.

Lookup interstitial cystitis for more information.
