Hi,
Does anyone have any advice on persistent urine infection? When my husband takes antibiotics it goes away but once stopped it comes back. This has been ongoing for a month

You may wish to try UTIStat if you find drinking the cranberry juice regimen to be too much...

It sells for about $35 dollars a 30 oz bottle but much less drinking involved...
Good luck with whatever you choose....

He should talk to his urologist. If he still has a prostate and he has prostatitis, the last thing he should do is take acidic fruit juices. That will increase the urine flow from his kidneys and will add to his frequent urination. DECREASE fluids, especially caffeine, alcohol, and any acidic fruit juice (like cranberry juice). And none at night. That, at least should help his symptoms.
Prostatitis is often relapsing and remitting, and is very hard to cure. There are many resistant infections, and mostly it isn't responsive at all to antibiotics. If he takes them, he should take them for a while and continue them long after symptoms disappear. Short term use causes resistance.
D-Mannose 2000 is reported to help.

That was the only thing that helped us. D Mannose. If they don't test what bacteria, certain antibiotics don't work and it comes back. This is over the counter and can't hurt you.
Do some reading. This was one of the sites I had read. I think he took it 3-4 times a day for a week but it seemed to stop the cycle for quite awhile..but he was paralzyed and when he had the catheter he more problems. Good luck. I would give this a try.
One more thing. It can alter your blood sugar so if you have diabetes, you have to be careful.
I had chronic UTIs for 2.5 years and had 15 courses of antibiotics. It was first decided that I wasn’t emptying my bladder completely and that the urine left in the bladder was a breeding ground for bacteria. I had a HoLEP procedure on my prostate to improve the flow. The bladder emptied just fine. But the UTIs continued. My urologist went over my most recent body scan with a fine tooth comb and found a very small kidney stone that had been missed on prior readings. Her assumption was that the stone was host to bacteria production and immune to being affected by antibiotics. She removed the stone six weeks ago.
Yesterday my latest urine test came back. It showed no infection for the first time in 2.5 years. As a sidebar, the tissue retained during the HoLEP came back from the pathologist showing a score of Gleason 9...thus starting me on this journey that we are all traveling.
First of all,do you have a large residual urine due to BPH or urethral stricture?
Will be difficult to completely eliminate infections under such circumstances
Is it cystitis (bladder) or prostatitis "
IF it is prostatitis, you will need 4-6 weeks of antibiotic therapy. I assume your doctor has culture results of your urine. and/or prostatic massage fluid.
Negative culture results can be misleading if the organism is "fastidious",i.e. does not grow in the USUAL culture media that most labs use. Special media or PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests may be neede to detect.

Gram Positive Uropathogens
asmscience.org/content/jour...
"some Gram-positive bacteria can impact pathogenic outcomes of co-infecting organisms. When taken together, the available evidence argues that Gram-positive bacteria are important uropathogens in their own right, but that some can be easily overlooked because they are missed by routine diagnostic methods. Finally, a growing body of evidence demonstrates that a surprising variety of fastidious Gram-positive bacteria may either reside in or be regularly exposed to the urinary tract and further suggests that their presence is widespread among women, as well as men. Experimental studies in this area are needed; however, there is a growing appreciation that the composition of bacteria found in the bladder could be a potentially important determinant in urologic disease, including susceptibility to UTI."
I've had my share of UTIs.... See a GOOD urologist....ASAP
Good Luck, Good Health and Good Humor.

Hello, I had the exact same problem. Antibiotics never provided a solution for me but a temporary fix. I did a bunch of research and what I found was that D-mannose and hibiscus were the most effective natural remedies. So next I started asking recommendations and looking for products that contained these. Fortunately I got some from a reliable producer and been taking it. It has been amazing for me. No more UTIs for more than a year
Thanks for all replies.
We had a call from doctor this morning who had been taking a look at MRI scan. Turns out it is a kidney and bladder stone! Not sure why this wasn't mentioned 2 months ago but anyway hopefully we can resolve now we know the cause
We have a hospital appointment in a month and a half to see about removing it! Not sure if the plan before then but see oncologist next week so might mention it then so it doesn't interfere with treatment
