Olivia,

This crops up regularly, although not in the context of a specific PCa treatment.

The first thing to consider is an insufficiency of acetylcholine - a key neurotransmitter. The old remedy is pickle juice. Anything with acetic acid will do. Worth trying first.

But magnesium before bed might help. Some swear by a banana, for the potassium. Etc, etc.

A friend has used quinine for years, but the FDA frowns on that [1]. Besides, I have never heard of a quinine deficiency.

Heard the other day for restless legs , thin shavings of ivory soap under the sheets of the calf area , and a teaspoon of yellow mustard. I have no idea but my daughters suffer from it so I’ll let you know.

Yellow mustard contains vinegar, & vinegar itself can be up to 20% acetic acid.

I have no idea what Ivory soap would do.

I drink water before going to bed. I no longer have leg cramps. I was already getting up to pee anyway so who cares if I drink before sleep?

I'm currently on Zytiga and frequently have muscle cramps at night. Making sure you have drank enough water is important.

Low potassium level is a possible side effect of Zytiga. The prednisone is supposed to help with that. I'm also taking a Kalium supplement (potassium). That seems to help. I will be talking to my doctor about it at the next appointment.

They need to study electrolites, particularly potassium, calcium and magnesium. Talk with your doctor. He is in Xgeva which could cause hypocalcemia and in Zytiga which could cause hypokalemia.

Bananas and keeping hydrated helped me. I feel your pain. My cramps would wake me up from a dead sleep to the moon with the muscle so tight I would have to pound it out. Drinking more water and eating a banana day for several days usually fixed it. Good luck!

Did he have his blood sugar Checked? When I started my chemo treatment, the doctor said I would likely become diabetic. 14 months later, same symptoms you described. On insulin an metformin. I feel great. Don't fear the needle.

I had occasional leg cramps before starting Zytiga but WOW what excruciating leg cramps while on Zytiga. Tried many things found on the web but nothing worked until I tried Cramp Defense. After two weeks no more cramps. I was only on Zytiga for three more months but I keep taking one pill a day. In the past five years I have had only two mild calf cramps and they were gone in a minute. I hate to give a commercial endorsement on this site but this worked so well for me.

Does he do a lot of heavy perspiring

Do to the Medications? He may be loosing a lot of electrolytes which will cause muscle crps. I drink G2 Gatorade for this problem plus take Niacin tablets. This helps.

Occasional severe calf cramp, usually right leg, at night while sleeping. Have to, very carefully, walk it out. The pickle juice idea seems like a great way to go as a first try. I use to eat up to 3 dill pickle spears a night to help with the sore throat I had during chemo. Didn't have cramps then. Think I'll start having a pickle spear before going to bed. Meds: Lupron, xgeva, celebrex, xtandi, prednisone, and gabapentin.

Stand up, putting all your weight on the leg with the cramp and it will disappear right away. I eat a banana a day for the extra magnesium; haven't tried pickle juice but sounds like a great idea.

I am currently not on any treatment and have the occasional leg cramp at night that feels like it will snap my femur. I take supplemental potassium but I drink plenty of water also. I may have not had enough that day though. Massage also helps.

Good luck.

I've had leg cramps for years before the PC diagnosis - the only thing that has helped me is Jigsaw Magnesium - slow release.
