Gain muscle mass on Adt?
Funny you should ask. My MO told me that patients that do weight training on ADT do much better. Those who don’t, gain weight, lose muscle mass and feel like crap. I was so scared of the affects I hired a personal trainer and committed to three workouts a week for a little longer than an hour each. When I first went in, I took off my shirt and told my trainer I wanted to look no worse than this in a year after being on Lupron. He said if you look like like that after a year working out with me, I’m closing my gym. He has worked me like a dog and I have actually gained substantial muscle mass from where I was before. And I feel great. Each work out I promise myself will be the last . But I always come back because the results have been so incredible. The only other exercise I get is walking my dog a little at playing golf but using a golf cart. I’ve also lost 10 pounds. So the answer is yes you can gain muscle mass on the ADT Despite what everybody else might say. You just have the put in the work. Im in Zytega too by the way and 62.
Schwah
That's great result Schwah. Keep up the hard work. I know from first hand experience that it's not easy but the results make it worthwhile.
I started ADT in May 2017 and started vegan diet at same time and lost 20 kg. Then when I started chemo and prednisone I started putting on weight again as prednisone make you hungry.
Between Feb and May this year I put 5kg back on, and as shown by Dexa scans (in Feb and May) this increase was all fat. Then in May I started a formal exercise regime developed by Exercise Medicine Cancer (Australia). 3 sessions per week each session approx 1.5 hrs. The 12 week program ended in August and initially I was dismayed to see my weight blow out another 4kg but another Dexa scan showed that this was ALL muscle.
So in answer to your question, yes you can put on muscle when on ADT (and chemo). But it's hard work and you need the right program. I was walking 8km a day, playing tennis 3 times a week prior to starting my scientific gym program and as you can see from above this did not stop me putting on fat. But the right exercises have actually done the job. Get a professional Exercise Physiologist and you can make a difference.
I walk 7 days a week,1 half miles,30 minutes gym 3 days a week maintained 6 years from dx ,no sign of cancer except psa going up again jevetana in a couple of months
Schwa's comment is accurate. It is harder to build muscle without testosterone but can be done. I have worked out hard for more than a decade and the usual side eefects are very low for me. However, the drugs are causing a generalized myopathy so even though I haven't lost mass or tone I can only access about half my actual strength.
I believe you can build muscle even with a nadir testosterone level . I’ve been able to accomplish that with a combination of the “ nitric oxide dump exercise regime “ 3x day ( you can find it on you tube but the Dr Zach Bush explanation- he developed them ) without resistance , then at the gym I’ve done a 6 day a week program which includes a one set total body circuit followed by exercising one body part with a combination of mostly machines and light dumbbells where I integrate high and low volume exercises to include concentric and eccentric along with isometric machine exercises. This is what has been necessary for me to build muscle after 5 3/4 years of Lupron plus 17 months of bicalutimide added to it . My hx includes 66 yo Stage IV numerous mets to local nodes and spine Gleason 9 all 12 nodes positive - psa presently undetectable. Go for it . If you are not particularly familiar with exercising it would probably be best to get a trainer at first as long as this person understands your goals and precautions
We are right, it is a pipe dream, but there are other ways to gain muscle mass. I will not talk about bodybuilding now, I will tell my story, as I am an ordinary person who likes to play sports. When I was in Brussels, I broke my leg and spent several months in bed. It was the worst period of my life because I lost a lot of weight. When I could walk again, I resumed my training at the gym, but I couldn't gain muscle mass again. Then I realized that I needed to completely change my lifestyle. I adjusted my sleep schedule, gave up junk food, quit smoking, and started taking sports supplements. I got my dream body back. I'm sure you'll be able to do the same.
