Any medication recommendations for someone suffering from severe ADHD?

Hello! Does anyone have any medication recommendations? I've been taking Vyvanse for a while now, and its done its job OK, but its getting to be too expensive. I've had to go up in dosage multiple times, and now its costing 100 dollars for a single month of pills. My insurance won't cover it, even with a prior authorization request.

So, does anyone have any ideas on medication I should try? Preferably something cheap, but maybe its covered by my insurance. I have my formulary but all the medication names are long and confusing. Thank you. :)

Hi, Mothscarecool,

Thank you for contacting CHADD National Resource Center on ADHD. I know it's tough with the cost of medication. I suggest talking to your doctor to see if there's a similar option to Vyvanse. You can also reach out to the patient advocate center to see if they can help with medical costs. Here's the link: patientadvocate.org/ Have you tried using a medication discount card instead of your insurance? It might be cheaper. Here's a link to one you can check out: secure.unitednetworksofamer...

If there is anything else you need, please let me know.

You may also want to try GoodRx. Unfortunately my medication is still $88/month through it but it would be way more expensive without it. (I take Methylphenidate.)

vyvanse was the one that my partner could use. The other stimulants are usually covered by insurance and are affordable. If a stimulant (vyvanse) works then I would try the others first. Vyvanse is not always covered by insurance, unfortunately.

I wouldn’t give up entirely in Insurance. This is where your testimony, your voice, is valuable. Write a letter with all if the life changing symptoms and functional impairments that you have. It is something no one ever does…is stick up for themselves. Living to my age, you learn that there aren't a lot of people that will do it for you either.

This is an appeal process and while they all have their own procedure, find out as much of the procedure as you can. Make sure they are patient with you and if you have a non patient customer service person or pre authorization person, ask for another. They usually are very nice but dont be afraid to explain that this is difficult for you and apart if the reason you need meds. Are these brand meds or generic?

I fought and won for my coverage of brand vs generic. I guess no one really wanted to hear my 2 page letter because they called me before the day that we scheduled the verbal Testimony i was going to give. Lol

Always thank everyone and be as pleasant and honest as you can.

Have you tried generic? It should be cheaper. Or generic in any other medication?
