I’ve spent a great deal of my life not fitting in and found comfort in it by teenage years. But let’s talk about this thing called adulting lol
Because of my ADHD I find myself working twice as hard to be good at things just so that when I lose focus on a project of forget to do things, it’ll kind of balance out.
I've made it this far with the help of my mother. She decided to quite literally “fall of the face of the earth” (long back story- might end up sharing it one day) I can't help but wonder if I failed to balance myself out enough to where she is gone.
Anyways, I found this site when I got into an argument with my spouse because I was offended by their tone. I found comfort in the responses and had to join.
Soooooo

I think I have to work harder then other people to to the same thing. I was diagnosed in my 40s and when I began taking medication it was like magic. Thing I struggled with suddenly became easy. If your not medicated you should look into it.
I agree. Though it took me trying 4 different meds, the fifth takes away the most troubling symptoms for me. The stimulants made anxiety worse but now I don’t react out of emotion as much.
It can be especially hard when you're used to getting help with it from someone, and then they aren't there to help you anymore...
Long before discovering that I have ADHD, I figured out that a lot of things aren't as easy for me as they are for other people. (And a few things, like "thinking outside the box" are easier for me than for most people. 🧠📤)
You are not alone in having challenges with adulting, regardless of whether you have ADHD or not.
You are in the middle of a big transition with the loss of support from your mom - sorry it was so sudden, that is rough.
So now that you are on your own you need to replicate the type of support your mom used to offer. Think about what that support looked like and see where you can find similar tools.
You may need to make stuff up that works only for you, and that's fine. Just think about what you need right now. What is the most important part of life you need support in to keep moving forward?
As best you can try not to solve all the areas at the same time, that is overwhelming. Just choose one that will have a big positive impact so you can gain momentum.
Reaching out here is a great place to start. There are a ton of extremely clever people here who have come up with all sorts of tools to support challenge areas.
Hang in there, welcome, and ask questions as you think of them. The support and ingenuity here is fantastic.
