absolutely!
this is something that alot of adhd experts write about in the books us adhd’ers find validating n helpful.
and its fabulous that all the adhd experts agree. the frustrating part is that the actual diagnosing and treating adhd is not determined by what the adhd experts know to be true.
i think its Dr Barkley who talks about how lack of emotional regulation ( sensitivity to rejection, explosive anger, etc) used to be the signs n indicators of adhd.
when society switched to medical model/ insurance model, then everything drastically changed. the dsm is strictly for insurance- so the provider can justify the diagnosis, treat it via “ best practices” and then get reimbursed my insurance. for this reason, getting treatment from a private providers that refuses to work with insurance is usually the best route to take for treatment but its very expensive!!!
as far as therapy, lets face it, very few therapist know alot about adhd. its not understood, agreed upon, nor taught in grad school. many of my friends are counselors just like me , n i am the only who knows about adhd( or is even interested) and believe me, grad school teaches about every other diagnoses found in therapy except adhd. ugh!
that being said, it baffles me about how many people give advice to “ talk to your doctor- u need a good therapist” etc. bc as ideal as that sounds, its not the way it works yet with adhd treatment. maybe someday, but as that article points out- we arent there yet!!
great article☀️
