So this just happened

My wife wasn't really happy when I was diagnosed and given Vyvanse. She worried I'd been snatched by the greedy hands of Big Pharma. We've been handling this by not talking about it. I get it, I didn't understand what ADHD really was until after I was diagnosed. She loves and cares for me and doesn't want me taken in.

So tonight I was washing the dinner dishes and I made a dumb joke about just remembering something she said earlier.

She replied, "I don't know what they're giving you, you're a lot happier, but you're still forgetting a lot."

I'm taking that as a major win in our little game of "let's pretend.". 😀

(and it makes me happy that she sees it)

Totally agree. She's coming from a place of love and I respect her thoughts and concerns. Again it's nice she's seeing a change, a good change. And yes, feels like things are looking up.

I think that years of untreated ADHD combined with years of depression and treatment for depression have done a major number on my memory. It's frustrating for sure!

I came to my diagnosis via a few years of therapy for depression spice up with a side of self loathing. Not sure if that adds to my short term memory issues, or, now that I know more about ADHD, that it's tied to the wack wiring of my brain. And yes, it's frustrating.

Hi Old_Owl! This is fantastic! It was similar at my house. My husband wasn't worried about big pharma, but he was worried that this was another inaccurate diagnosis and that I would get excited that I had an answer that turned out to not be the case. I have been able to put that particular concern to bed, thankfully. I'm glad your wife is seeing the difference!!!

Thanks for the reply. I think this is where my wife is. While big pharma is a concern, she also worried this could be a bad diagnosis with false hope wrapped around it.

that’s great , I had the same issue when diagnosed , thinking the same thing, I was quite worried, even coming off for some days, but when I went back on , I realised how much more calm I felt and how I slept better , so all good x

I think she's being cautious because she obviously wants to see you get better. It is worth having a conversation though, it will reassure both of you that medication doesn't dictate your life and meds are just a means to an end. You choose your treatment at the end of the day and BTW you can take meds part-time in case you didn't know. Adults with ADHD are so good at finding their own coping mechanisms, that medication really is just a stimulant to help us flow better. Not the only thing that works!

So many people tried meds for short or long amounts of time and then ditched it and went their own way.

PS: forgetfulness might be due to the meds or the wrong dose, but ultimately we're all allowed to be forgetful! :)

Thanks for your reply. And the part-time taking of my meds is interesting. Makes sense since I've made it through 58 years with it. As you said, so far it seems much easier with than without.

And the forgetfulness is nothing new for me, and I don't feel it's worse on Vyvance. Rather I believe it was an opening for her to acknowledge I've been doing better the past few weeks. Not perfect, but better. 😀

And the deeper conversation will come when the time is right for both of us.

So interesting. I'm a serious critic of business and sleazy business practices. But it never dawned one me to worry about "big pharma" once I got my ADHD diagnosis. I'm heading off to the sports medicine doctor today to get a shot for my increasingly arthritic knee. Have no idea how much the pharma company makes on the shot. I do know the first shot produced amazing results and that my doctor didn't push it hard and I do trust her.

A person who does not have ADHD cannot possibly understand what it takes to manage everyday affairs . As for meditations it it helps great! I can no longer take any stimulant medications due to a cardiac rhythm abnormality and do not find the non stimulants helpful . There is a non "Big Pharma" alternative- and that is High CBD Cannabis tincture ( not what yu buy in the supermarket but from a dispensary) . As a Nurse Practitioner I have done my research on this and use it myself after consultation with other health Professionals . If interested Private message me
