Hi, I would offer that you don't have to keep a journal to benefit from CBT. People who can't read or write are able to access and find benefit from CBT. I think what's important is finding the right therapist, someone who will be creative and think outside the box. Possible solutions if the client wants to use a journal technique is to record videos or just audio content. I think for this it helps to have a structure, like questions the client can respond to. A good therapist will help an adhd client write these. Another option is a coach, needs to be one who understands ADHD. Many coaches are therapist. Hope this helps
I see a psychotherapist and although I do get some homework, it's usually a blurb on whatever we are discussing that session. I'm not the best at sticking to journaling etc. so I commit maybe half an hour (more like 10 minutes) to whatever the blurb is and we discuss it and it moves forward from there... like Treading_carefully said, it's about finding someone who is compatible to you and what your able to commit to. Showing up is doing the work too.
I'm in Kingston, Ontario Crystalsphinx! I am newly diagnosed at 51. Same issue. But a great doctor who is learning with me. We can chat if you like! I would LOVE to start some sort of support group for like-minded people. Support groups have been shown to be the best ongoing support for ADHD adults.
