What do you guys do when you have zero motivation for a project?

I have been struggling at work with this one thing I am working on. It’s just so much for so little reward. I can’t make game out of it. Plus, what I am getting done is not my best work because I save it for the last minute.

If you can’t find a work reward, how about a personal outside of work reward? Or an accountability partner? Choose a particular time each day to focus just on that project for a certain length of time.

During the last 5 minutes of that time, write down what you will do during the next scheduled time you work on it.

You will find that accomplishing things incrementally leads to a sense of satisfaction.

Plus that reward you determined earlier. 😉😉

I start a second project, and use each project to procrastinate on the other

Gotta use that ADHD procrastination energy as a hidden superpower! Whatever works! ❤️

Hi NotoriousFox I have similar issues and recently found it helpful to involve my managers or the person / team that requests that project to be delivered into the process of making it more rewarding.

One thing I started doing is building a roadmap - as detailed as possible for me to start chunking it down into smaller bite size steps - and showing that roadmap to said team or manager. It’s been tough because I really struggle building roadmaps but focusing on that one document actually helped me visualize the project in a different, more positive manner. It also helped me identify where on the way I would need approval or feedback (starting with that roadmap) to motivate me on the way. Finally it made me feel accountable, and also helped me identify gaps into the project that I was able to raise to the team and managers — they then had also to do some work to figure out certain gaps.

Maybe your lack of motivation is a sign that this project could be tackled differently and instead of being harsh on yourself for not being motivated, could you see this as a sign that the way your brain works could be of great value for the company?

I’m saying all this not knowing which project or industry your working on — but hoping that might help a little to get outside perspective :)

Good luck!!
