Managing Hyper Focus & Giving Lectures No One Wants To Hear ?? 😊

I got diagnosed a little over a month ago. I’m on Adderall and it’s been a marvel. And it also feels like a devilish whirlwind. I get into manic episodes of talking, on & on. My sweet husband is putting up with this so kindly, but it’s hard on him. I also do the Hyper-focus thing. Hours spent chasing an idea with Google - each one leading to another. Down the Rabbit Hole! With the Adderall I feel really awake for the first time in a long time. My therapist said it’s okay to ask others with ADHD how they manage the things I deal with. How do you deal with this aspect of your ADHD? Thx so much 😊

happens to me all the time! I'm quite chatty when it comes to certain things. I try to limit my time researching and set a timer or alarm so I don't get carried away. Sometimes it's easier to do than other times because it's a little thing that is easy to forget.

I don’t always do that but when I’m attempting to clean garage for the hundredth time I set a timer so I don’t get carried away. Prime example was me in the attic thinking of way to make cool little nukes for storage. Meanwhile, my wife thinks I’m just going to clean for 30 minutes

ah I get that! It's wayyy too easy to get carried away especially when it comes to cleaning. Goodness, it's easy to!

I'm confused by your wording... are you describing pre-Adderall symptoms, or post-Adderall side effects? If my Adderall was turning me into a devilish whirlwind that spends hours chasing down the Google rabbit hole and goes into manic episodes of talking, I might be concerned about the dosage being too high.

That feeling of clarity for the first time after starting medication is... life changing. Personally, I deal with hyper focus by using timers to remind myself to take break (when I remember to set them, lol), and taking advantage of the things I hyperfocus on by finding work that involves them. Not sure what to tell you talking to much about the things that interest you... I try to pick my audience based on the topic, but even then, I can definitely go on for a bit too long lol

Oh! and question: You say your is "putting up with [it] kindly, but it's hard on him". Is that what he's told you, or is that negative self talk? Because I know I'm quite often a lot harder on myself about going on rants/tangents than other people around me are.

I’m happy 😃 to hear that you feel more alert and alive but spinning like a

whirling dervish concerns me. I’m on generic Strattera and was still feeling a little sluggish. I discussed this with

my therapist and she suggested upping

my dosage to 50 MG. I felt like I was jumping out of my skin and to make this worse I was on my shifts as a caregiver for clients who have severe dementia.

Fortunately I arrived home in one piece. And the problem here is that the Strattera is in gel caps. Trust me even with 25 MG I can prattle on and even 4 this group at time, my replies can be too long

Hi there, I also had issues with hyperfocusing when I first started taking stimulant medication, granted the issues aren't fully gone, but I have it much more under control. I work with individuals who have adhd, research adhd, and make videos to help give remedies and insight into adhd related issues and struggles. I made a 20+ minute video going over tactics to help manage hyperfocusing on my youtube channel. If you're interested, the video is titled "ADHD Hyperfocusing Issues & Remedies" and my youtube channel link is in my bio. I hope this helps.

Hello. I had to respond to you and we are on a whole different topic. However if I had done anything else I would have lost you here and or forgot to come back. I was intrigued by your response. You are doing everything I feel is a calling on my life . God wants me to do deal with this so i can somehow help those that have been assigned to be. I AM OBBSESSED WITH knowlegde of adhd and how to manage it. I wanna attract african American Christian married woman living in shame. i am a research junkie. lol i havent been oficially diagnosed but going to seek evaluation very soon. My son was diagnosed at 7 he is now 21. .. You work with individuals with adhd thats what i wanna do and I been procrastinating about creating a channel because its hard for me to make decisions of a niche. I wanna find something that i can talk about that i have perfected but i realized you don't have to wait to become perfect. No one is perfect. You shed some light for me and its confirmation. What strategy did you use to help motivate you to begin? I HAD A CHANNEL years ago and created 60 videos in over like 2 weeks. problem was i was all over the place with content and in every video i have a different title. lmbo. lost interest. I will check out your channel I'm sure it will help someone who needs it. families have no idea what we go through. ohhhh maybe i can talk about how family ignorance to adhd effects our emotional and mental well being. Then break things down. Anyway thanks for responding .

It can be easy for us to become enraptured by the stream of our thoughts as we talk about new things. Many of us are verbal thinkers, meaning that talking things out is part of our process to understand something. To overcome a tendency to over-process, fall back on curiosity of what other people might have to say. That requires holding space open for them to consider, respond, and contribute to the conversation. As great as Ideating may feel by ourselves, it can be even more powerful when shared by a group.

Hi!

First off, welcome (officially) to the ADHD club! I have been a member since 2009 lol.

Keep with the meds.

Keep up the good communication.

Keep reaching out to groups like this one.

and.... I felt like the clouds parted when I first started the same medication. You've been "running on dial up" and its 2020 right?
