Causes

I’ve read that ADHD is inherited from a parent and so far there are about ten genes in the brain associated with it. Do any of you know what causes ADHD?

From my research, no known causes.

From my experience, it’s best to not investigate that question if you have it. It’ll drive you down a spiral of destruction that has no answer. Consider the things you learn about it along the way but don’t make it fact, is what I believe. It appears there is a lot to learn from it still and a lot to understand.

An important thing to keep in mind though, question the strengths of having it and spread the positivity to reduce the stress or overwhelming feeling of something unknown. I fear the unknown so it does me no good to swim in that pool.

Strengths of ADHD is how we are quick learners and problem solvers. If we can tap into ourselves, which for me, is very easy since I’m self aware of what I do and I believe others with ADHD are as well but have yet to realize it. Once realized, their world will start to change and it’s key to start working on your strengths from having it at that point of realization from self awareness.

When I receive a problem, I automatically look at solutions. As necessary or unnecessary it can be. To me, that holds much value in the sense of manipulating what is “abstract” to something that is more “humanized”. I feel a bit whacky saying all this but I like to keep positive and just speak my thoughts because I have so many of them and it slows them down and stimulates my head to manage the ADHD.

My brain crashed. 😁😩 but I hope this brings you some insight

Best of luck

Thanks so much

Hi Kdizzle,

I agree with fakehackr. There are a lot of theories about what causes ADHD, and the symptoms of ADHD, but so far the evidence is inconclusive as to actionable steps you can take to address it. Sometimes it just sounds like a litany of things that are 'wrong' without addressing how to make them 'right' and its discouraging to most of us.

New scientific knowledge is helping us understand some of the mechanisms of what we already knew (like taking fish oil and B vitamins, and how ADHD medication is supposed to work.) The relatively new understanding of Neuroplasticity in the brain in later life gives us hope that we can learn new coping skills later in life. Knowing that ADHD runs in families informs us that, if a family member has an ADHD diagnosis we might want to be checked to and that coaching or therapy should be done at the family systems level. There is hope that, one day, science will reveal foods, vitamins, medication or gene therapy that will remove emotional dysregulation and impulsivity, but there's nothing definitive so far that I've heard. I'm an ADHD coach myself, and I'll gladly point my clients to proven therapies!

That being said, there are strategies that have been proven to work for most of us... staying positive, developing our strengths first, getting coached, CBT, aerobic exercise, learning to pause before reacting, and mindfulness, and all sorts of strategies. Yes, sometimes ADHDers have to learn skills that others seem to take for granted. Yet we are learning that, once skills are learned around managing ADHD symptoms, the benefits of ADHD (like sensitivity, creativity, love of learning, and passion) can be amazing.

Hope that helps.

There is no know cause for ADHD. In my situation I actually have no family (immediate or extended) with ADHD. I am the only one. So that is fun. But yeah there are possible genetic links and the fact that the brain is just formed differently (neurodifferent). I hope that helps a little.

I don't believe it's genetics. I've looked for years for the answer and Dr. Gabor Mate, he's on YouTube, makes the most sense about it.
