Does anyone use supplements/vitamins to help ease ADHD symptoms?

My son is on medication and I read that Omega-3 is good for kids.

My friend’s child has taken this from age 7 and is now 17. It helps him.

We use Nordic naturals for Omega 3 and Hardy Nutritionals DEN micronutrients. Our son was taken off all meds by psychiatrist.

I’m really interested in getting our daughter off meds as well.

Are these supplements given in capsule form? Liquid? Gummies? Etc

We buy capsules. Also available in powder. There is another company besides Hardy Nutritionals who also produces them, True Hope. I think they offer capsules and powder as well. Definitely consult with your prescriber because use of micronutrients may decrease the dose of medications or cause them to be eliminated, which is what happened with us. Almost four years now!!!

How does your child take this? Does he/she swallow the capsule? Or can you open it and hide it in food or drink? It looks so large I don't think my 6 yo can swallow it.

how expensive is the supplements?

They are expensive. True Hope is less expensive than Hardy Nutritionals. Why, I could not say. They are not covered by insurance. Our Hardy Nutritionals run about $110 per month, so definitely not a $10 copay at the pharmacy.

We buy the mini fish oil pills, because regular are pretty big. The micronutrients are capsules. He got used to taking pills when he was on meds, so he is really good at it. You can sprinkle the micronutrients, but not sure how that would taste. They also sell in a powder already. There is also another brand called True Hope that you could investigate. If your child is on meds, definitely consult with your prescriber as use of micronutrients could cause your child to use less medication or need to have medication eliminated.

He was last on guanfacine and focalin together.

that’s what my son is on. I’ma single mom so I couldn’t afford $110/month

I hear you. It's a sacrifice for sure. You could investigate True Hope, but I think you would still be looking at around $70 per month.

do you give your son the omega 3 pills and the other ones in the morning or at night?

Cjkchamp in reply to ADHDMom2013

He gets micronutrients 3 times per day, and I give him the fish oil at night.

did you notice a change with the fish oil?

Nope, but I figure it is good for brain development.

that’s a bummer but I still got it anyway, can’t hurt. I just wish he could calm down. I feel bad and stressed lol.

Have you tried L-theanine at all? It's supposed to provide calming focus.

I’ve never even heard of it.

Yeah, it was one of the things the psychiatrist told us about.

I’ll look into it, thank you!

You gave this in addition to Hardys and Omega? Just curious what else you gave such that medication is not required? Also does this help with emotional and rejection sensitivity?

Cjkchamp profile image
Cjkchamp in reply to BStron

L-the anime is in addition. It did not seem to help my son, but may help others. I also didn’t see a difference with omegas, but I figured they couldn’t hurt, so he takes them every night.

Also look into dietary omega-3 sources-that might be cheaper?

how do you know what Hardy Nutritionals supplements to take? Or is it just one pill?

Cjkchamp profile image

Psychiatrist told us how she wanted it implemented. Started with one pill twice per day. Then increased to two pills twice per day...and so forth. A full dose of Hardy is 4 pills three times per day, but need depends on the person.

omega 3 is good for kids with ADHD and so is magnesium (especially if any tics are involved). My son took these but was getting frustrated taking supplements plus his ADHD meds after awhile, so I stopped the supplements because the meds worked 100x better. In my experience I didn’t see any difference with the omega 3’s, though have read a lot of good research on it. I will restart magnesium any time a tic resurfaces (which happens like every 6 months). The tics go away after about a week with the magnesium. Be careful with gummy supplements that are full of dyes and such as these can worsen symptoms in kids, especially red dye with my son.

my son can’t do red dye either. They used to give him meds with pink dye and I had them nor mix it in and he hated it.

I think I’ve tried those before but they were gummies and he didn’t like the taste. Do they work well?
