Any ways to get around high cost of Vyvanse?

Does anyone know of any ways to get around the high costs of Vyvanse? I have a high deductible plan and while i have paid literally over 9K in out of network costs i still have $2800 in network deductible to hit. I don't want to put a price on my son's mental health but it's hard to stomach $250+ / mth after having spent so much with pyschiatrists, pyschotherapists, OT, etc. The decision to go on medication in the first place has been hard enough, and having this financial stress as an added factor is not what we need right now. Any help would be much appreciated. We tried the manufacturer coupon on the vyvanse website and that is the $252. If we go through insurance it is $315 bucks due to my in network deductible i have not met.

I am so sorry you are having to deal with this! It's not fair.

When I looked up the company that makes it, on their website it talks about financial assistance. See if this will help:

If not, I would ask his psychiatrist what other options you have. It is common to try a few types and doses before you find the right one. Don't feel bad if the first one is to costly. There should be one that fits his needs that is just as good.

Thanks for your tip. The website coupon only gets us to 252 per month. I tried that first and also called both my insurance carrier and prescription benefits to see if they could help out in any way. I may talk to my doctor about prescribing just a few pills maybe like 5 to start so that we can figure out if it even will be a good fit. If it is, I may just eat the costs. And switch to a lower deductible plan next year.

You could also contact the company and tell them you need more help. I assume it is becuase there is no generic rx..

Your child will still get the benefits from medication if you try something else. They can find something else. Please don’t worry about this.

Parents I know with a high deductible use the immediate release tablets (in this case Adderall tablets) and give them in the morning and at lunchtime. The price difference is obvious and the effect is usually the same (extended release is partly a convenience factor of once daily dosing and, for some, a smoother medication effect during the day). For extra cost savings, GoodRx.com offers coupons with discounted prices (my allergy medicine was much cheaper with GoodRx than with my insurance).

Same here. My husband, myself, and my son all get it for $30 with the manufacturers coupon.

Thanks is the coupon for 30 bucks the manufacturer one one the vyvanse website? I used that one and there are still restrictions based on what insurance you have. The lowest that coupon got us was 252 for 30 day supply. I also used goodRx and the lowest on there was over 300 as well.

We may consider adderall as suggested above.

We used the Shire Cares program for a while until we got a better insurance plan. I think it got us down to around $150 per script when we were on a high deductible plan.

Thanks appreciate that! So far I decided to get 5 pills in case they don't work in the first place and we are going to start tomorrow. So that gives me some time to figure out whether Shire Cares would work for us.

Sounds like a good place to start. Not sure if this is always the case, but I notice for my son, if he has anything with citric acid in it when he takes his med, (juice, fruit mostly) it seems to interfere with absorbing and working for him. My son and I both take Vyvanse and I notice especially for me it works faster if I have a non-acidic meal with it. Same for my son, and he gets a good meal before some of the appetite suppressing effects of the med. kick in. Just maybe a few troubleshooting tips for trying a new med. I know it's different for everyone. Hope you see some positive results this week.

I had this exact same problem until we met our deductible. Unfortunately the $30 manufacturers coupon didn’t seem to work until we met our deductible. And the prices with Good Rx were in the $350 to $370 range. I would look to see if there was another med to try if possible. The Shire Cares program is income dependent.
