Vyvanse (Thoughts?)

My son (5th grader) will be taking Vyvanse for the first time tomorrow. I have so many thoughts crossing my mind. I’m terrified of seeing him go through a change. He’s such a happy boy with a beautiful heart. He just has a hard time focusing in class.

Any thoughts on this med?? Any words of wisdom??

I’m worried about middle school. I’d rather him start while he’s in elementary (and he’s with me, since I work in his school).

Vyvanse works differently with every child. I have two children that are ADHD and take Vyvanse at different strengths. It might take a few weeks to notice a difference. We stuck with Vyvanse because we tried others and found that this one works the best.

My son started on Vyvance as his first medication after being diagnosed with ADHD. He was 6 when he started it and just under 50 lb. He was started on the 10mg and st first we thought this was perfect for him but about 1-1.5 months later it was like he wasn’t taking anything so we went up to the next dose of 20mg, this also seemed to be working good until we gave it to him one weekend and noticed a total change in his mood, he was displaying signs of severe depression almost and didn’t want to do anything. It was so sad to see him that way. We immediately stopped it and started him on medadate. It’s hard knowing how your kid will react to his medication and you will probably have to try different ones and doses to see what works best for him. But it’s totally understandable how you would be nervous. It’s good he is older and can know and tell you side effects and how it’s affecting him too though. Keep your head up! This will help him so much in school and in every day life you will be glad you did it and can see him have more success:)

My 7 year old just started Vyvanse 2 weeks ago. The best thing we ever did. I am getting so much positive feedback from his school. We tried everything before we went to medication. The only thing we are having issues with is sleeping and a little with appetite. Sleep I have been doing essential oils and have helped and then I make sure he is at least snacking all the time with good foods. I will not go back. Again the best thing we have done for him. He is still goofy and his wonderful personality and kind heart actually comes out more since the impulses and anger is subsided.

He started today. He’s a bit different in the sense that he wants to be cleaning. He asked if he could stay after school and help his teacher clean. When I walked into the classroom, he was on a chair cleaning a shelf w/a Clorox wipe.

He came home and changed out of his school uniform and tidied the house. He wants everything straight.

He said that he feels like he can run a marathon. He also did not fight w/his brother at all.

😳 I got scared.

I hope this over-the-top energy subsides. It scares me a little. His teacher did say that he did great today.

We’ll have to wait and see.

How is your son going now? My son is 8. A beautiful soul and loves life bit behind in school. I am petrified you begin him on vyvanse.

My son has been on 10 mg. of Vyvanse for a week now. We can see that it helps him be calmer but his teacher says she still has a hard time getting him to follow directions. It's still an improvement over Focalin which was the first drug we tried. It made him withdrawn, irritable and in his words, "sad." It broke my heart. I'm going to discuss this with his pediatrician and see what he says about increasing his dose or trying something else. I am very concerned about side effects though. It is a delicate balance and we just have to try to figure out what works best for each child.

Yyvanese might work with him. But with my son it didn't. He got headaches and nausea. He had to take it with food. Now he is on Focalin which works. He doesn't have to take it with food. No headaches or nausea. Its just trial and error.

My son took this medicine twice in his list of drugs we have tried. Unfortunately it didn't work either time. The first time it induced severe tics. He would jerk his neck and arms so bad that he couldn't ride his bike. The second time we tried it many years later it caused severe stomach aches and constipation. Along with sleep issues. He couldn't sleep at all. It would be 3am and he would still be up in bed. The tics soon returned as well in full force and now his file is noted that this medicine and others like it with the same active drug are not to be used with him, Good luck just remember each child is different and one might work well with one and not the other.

Hi there,

I was thinking of switching my son to Vyvanse as well. I'm hearing such mixed results. He already seems to be showing signs of depression, anxiety and impulsive behavior. Honestly I'm nervous. Not sure what to do. Seems trial and error.
