Help with my child getting violent at school

My 8yr old was suspended from school for stabbing his teacher with a pencil, he has an autism and adhd diagnosis , I have been asking school since last year to get him on an IEP again he has currently a 504 and isn’t sufficient , school gave me an appointment until November 22 even though they are aware of this incident with the teacher and he’s been struggling a lot since last year , his case worker gave me an appointment for almost a month , why can anyone see this is urgent or I’m a really overreacting? I’m worried sick of sending him back to school knowing that he can hurt someone else or himself..I don’t know where to get help 🤷🏼‍♀️😢😢

My son was the same way. He hurt a few students and his teacher last year in kindergarten, of all grades. The school psychologist turned us to an advocate group that helped us get into an IEP and occupational therapy and just regular therapy sessions for our son and for his father and I. Can your sons school psychologist step in at all? They might have some great resources to help your family out with this tiresome situation.

If you send a certified letter asking for a meeting about an IEP they have 10 days to schedule one by law. Schools often fight switching to an IEP because there are a lot of federally mandated things they have to follow with it.

Is he on medication?

Schools are not allowed to tolerate violence so an IEP isn't the whole answer. Been there, done that.

Unfortunately, after spending last year essentially working full time as an advocate with training on the fly (online, credible research) nonstop all day every day (so much for my own real personal career development... or the needed income), it came down to I have to put this all on the front burner since my daughters future life is in jeopardy given her severe learning disabilities so far untreated (she is in middle school!!!).

That said, as mentioned already, you must write a letter - there should be samples on wrightslaw.com and there you will also find the laws and requirements the school MUST follow from there.

Once I started demonstrating and quoting my needs and how they fit into legal rights it was fun to watch dynamics alter.
