So we decided to keep my son on his medication strattera for the summer and his behavior is out of control, the anger and hitting is so bad right now I want to take him off but the doc decided to double it to 18 mg and it's been two days no improvement. I'm about at wits end with this med and the doc just wanting to throw more at him. Im trying to keep him on a schedule but this come up and anything remotely stressful or upsetting makes him so angry. And I dont have the money to get all the things she wants me too after paying for Lego camp. Anyone got any tips?
Summer: So we decided to keep my son... - CHADD's ADHD Pare...
Summer
Follow a stricter schedule whole staying on his current dosage helped my son. The relaxed time schedule that comes with the summer doesn't help the ADHD brain.
so sorry for your stress. I remember when our sons meds we not right, is this a pediatric psychiatrist? how long does he want him on this drug? Is he getting enough sleep? Promise it will get better low dose never worked for us and I just had to trust. we take 2 different, 1 for pulsive behavior and1 for focus/sleep
Big hugs..
I'd personally see if the situation improves any within the week and maybe try seeking a second opinion if it doesn't. After all, this one doctor won't know all the answers.
How long has your son been on the medicine? If he has been on the medicine throughout the year I’m surprised he has changed over the summer if he’s getting his normal dose. I agree keeping him on schedule helps and that includes meds. How old is he? I have a 13 yr old whose hormones are raging and I’ve seen a big change in his attitude/short tempered but I’m hopeful it will pass given I know his body is changing right now. I’m surprised your dr doubled the dose of meds. Normally they gradual increase the dosage vs just doubling. If behavior continues I would suggest changing meds as it appears it’s not helping him. Hang in there and best of luck.
I have to ask: how well was this medication working prior to summer vacation? And how old is your son? The change from a very structured setting, with definite times for bedtime, meals, etc to a more relaxed atmosphere can cause problems with ADHD kids for sure. I would like to mention that this medication often works better on adults than children. It is not a stimulant medication and takes 4-6 weeks before it is truly effective. (I worked on the clinical trial for this medication about 20 year ago and this was one of the findings.) You won't see any changes from the dose increase for at least one month. I would talk with the prescribing physician about his behavior and see what she says.
Can there be a negative reaction to Strattera? My son had been on it for several months, but with summer came impossible behavior. We took
him off the Strattera and saw gradual improvements over the next week while tapering off.
Is that in my head?
We are having the same experience with our 9 year old son. He also takes 2mg of Intuniv at dinner time. The Intuniv does seem to improve the mood challenges within 15 mins but bedtime can be a struggle again later. His angry outbursts are constant and his approach to me and my hubby are getting more cutting and intense. Doc wants to wait until school starts to see if things calm down but I am wondering if changing/adding to his med regime may be a good idea now given we have 2.5 weeks before school starts. Any feedback on starting a new med this close to the start of school? Thank you in advance.
