Parenting the ADHD Child: A Little Gallows Humor

Most parents when they send their kindergartner to school: Bye, sweetie. I'm going to miss you so much! Have fun and learn a lot!

Me: David, for the love of all that's decent, DON'T throw chairs across the classroom, and for godsakes, please leave your underwear and pants ON.

True story.

As Kurt Vonnegut would say, "Laughter and tears are both responses to frustration and exhaustion. I myself prefer to laugh, since there is less cleaning up to do afterward."

Sometimes when I am baffled or just irritated I will laugh. People find it inappropriate.

If it means losing your mind or maintaining your patience, I think you can feel free to giggle a little.

So my daughter was disciplined by her kindergarten teacher for sitting in an unladylike way. I just wanted to laugh at her and say "well at least she didn't lick the wall today". I don't have enough energy to worry about everything, so I agree with you, sometimes it's better to laugh.

Oh my goodness. She's a kid with ADHD. The fact that she is sitting is the win! Who cares HOW she's sitting.
