In praise of walking!

Hi folks! Like a fair few people here I am more active on the running forums at the moment. But I have always been a walker and I came to running from walking. 3 years ago I had a health scare and came to the conclusion losing weight would help. My doctor recommended 20 minutes walking 3x a week. Which I found incredibly patronizing as I did more than that anyway. But something needed to be done so I swallowed my anger and started getting up earlier to do my 20 minute walks. They soon increased to 40 minutes every day. And then I added a walk after work to a station further down the line. In that first year I walked off about 2 stone (I watched my food aswell - it wasn't all walking!).

After the first year I started running, but walking is still a major part of my life. 3 years on I've lost nearly 3 stone and it hasn't gone back on. Those 20 minute walks turned my health around. Maybe my doctor was right, but I could have throttled him at the time!

So, happy walking folks! It's worth it👍

Yes you are an inspiration. I neglected my exercise for a while, and then I got cancer. Earlier this year while having treatment I decided to start walking again, always liked it. Like you I started small steps, and built up to 12000 steps per day. Find it very addictive but in a very healthy way.

Well done Annmar! 12000 steps is an awesome achievement over the course of just one year, when you are battling with health issues. Hope you will continue to go from strength to strength!

Lovely post jayseeskinny, like you I found walking first and have a great love for it. It can help so many people on so many different levels. Thank you for your inspirational post.
