Referral for MRI

Hi my audiologist referred me to have an MRI after my last hearing test. Nobody has explained why, but my own research has come up with acoustic neuroma. Any thoughts?

Hi Loubub ..Doctor Google can be a frightening way to look for reasons why you have been referred for an MRI . My experience was the same . Mainly hearing loss then Referred for an MRI by the audiologist . You don’t say what symptoms you have if any and the audiologist wouldn’t second guess. I appreciate this is no help but it is best you wait for the MRI and get the results.

Thanks for the reply. Hearing loss one side, I have a hearing aid. Tinnitus, headaches. I get facial drop with headaches sometimes. But I had my hearing test in December, then my gp foned asking a few questions and said I’d been referred to ENT. I havnt seen ent yet but I’ve an appointment for mri in February. So a bit confused as no one has actually said the reasons why.

Hi Iwould guess from your symptoms yes they want to rule out AN. I have exactly same symptoms except for facial droop and my MRI was all good no AN.

My experience would appear to be exact opposite of yours. I had similar symptoms and GP immediately said he would refer me to ENT to check for acoustic neuroma and who would probably send me for hearing test and MRI. So well informed from the start. However, knowing this, anxiety went through the roof especially as waiting list to see ENT is 40 weeks long. Hope you get sorted soon. Try not to worry. ANs are rare I’m told.

I’m the same. Was referred for MRI and CT after left sided hearing loss, headaches and ocean noises/tinnitus. ENT just told me this was to look at inner ear and bones. I then went to Doctor Google and read all about acoustic neuromas. Had MRI last week and next appt not until March to see ENT, wish it was sooner. So fed up of waiting and wondering. Good luck with yours.

Thanks , I hope yours is good news in March. The audiologist didn’t ask me anything at my hearing test , just said my hearing had declined a bit since last test. Then days later a gp rang me about a referral. Feels quite random 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️As no one has asked or shared any concerns with me

I had my MRI last October ‘on suspicion’ of an AN after sudden drastic hearing loss in one ear. I had heard nothing by Christmas so contacted the hospital and had a phone call from the ENT consultant who confirmed that it is indeed an AN but I have to wait for an outpatient appointment on 25th Feb before being told any more details. I hope that you have a good outcome.
