Hi Gail,
I'm presuming that you've found out your BMI (NHS Choices live well lose weight pages have a calculator, if not) and that you've discovered yourself to be overweight or obese and are aiming to lose that amount in twelve weeks from such a position.
That said - the answer is yes. A stone is about 6.35 Kg and the maximum amount you should really be losing - averaged out - is about 1 Kg a week. Though you will probably lose weight faster than that in the first couple of weeks or so.
Therefore, that's a very reasonable and quite moderate goal - you might well manage a bit better than that over that period.
Lots of good and free advice on the NHS Choices live well lose weight pages including a free 12 week plan and lots of tips and experiences from people really doing the weight loss thing on this blog too. Both are worth having a good read of.
Good luck.
Thanks been reading the plan which I copied first time reading looks daunting but I have decoded to look at it week by week it says you should consume 1400 cals what will happen if I eat less I generally eat 900 to a thousand cals at the moment is this to low Gail
Hi Gail,
I would advise against VLCDs (Very Low Calorie Diets) except under medical supervision. Generally, they are of little use unless the dangers of a prevalent medical condition - like being very obese, are higher than the risks of a VLCD.
If you lose weight too quickly, you will be much more likely to put it back on in the medium to long term.
A weight loss of about 1 Kg (2.2 lb) a week, averaged out, is about as fast as you would want to go. For sure, there will be blips and spurts, for all sorts of reasons, but if you're losing weight much faster than that then I would suggest fine tuning your regime to slow it down a tad.
Which, by the way, is exactly what I did. I'm still a bit 'ahead of the game' but I've slowed it down a bit.
Good luck.
