Hi brenmure,

It's not quite as simple as that, really.

I'd suggest you start by reading through the NHSChoices live well lose weight pages, finding out your BMI - use the calculator there - and make a decision about how much weight you want to lose.

Then, you need to look at what you're eating - again lots of good and free advice on the NHSChoices pages - and try and plan a way to eat less calories than what is usually needed to maintain your current body weight. Though how many that is will depend upon lots of factors such as the amount of exercise / activity you do.

The notion is that if you burn off more calories than you take in, you'll lose weigh, but it's not really quite as simple as that (again!). if you read around this blog you will find out more about how it all works from people who are actually right now losing weight and learn from their experiences.

I strongly recommend, as well, the 12 week plan, which is also free. Even if you choose not to follow it exactly, it contains lots of very good advice and works as a basis for any plan you might devise for yourself.

Personally, since 11/1/13, I've lost over 10 Kgs and I'm now overweight as opposed to obese.
