Are there any ex Slimming World members out there?
I have been following Slimming World for around a year and lost 2 stone but I have plateaued recently. I am at the same weight as I was in November. Every week I start off great and I try following the plan and I swear down that I do follow the plan as it is.
I am type 1 diabetic and started on Omnipod 5 three weeks ago and so I have to count carbs and do so by the NutraCheck app. As well as logging carbs, it logs calories as well and I have started to notice certain things.
The "syn free" packet of rice is 500+calories (and I do eat the full packet), add in a 200 calorie chicken breast and veg and I am over 800 calories for one meal. The 2 syn packet of couscous is 600+ calories. The "free" chips I make, with beans, egg, mushrooms and ham is over 700 calories. If it is a calorie controlled diet, then surely I am going over my calories nearly every day?
I have started running and I feel I have been discouraged from doing so, my leader telling me that running "won't make a difference to my weight loss". That is utter utter nonsense isn't it? If I am burning 300-400 calories going for a run, surely it will add to it?
They did a poll in group just last week and she asked for everyone to raise their hand who is happy with their weight loss so far and only around 15% raised their hand and it did get me thinking about whether it is right for me.
I don't want to be critical too much, as I spent two years before this thinking "I'll start Monday", "this little bit won't hurt" etc and put on so much weight and Slimming World saved me from that. I have tried following Nutracheck/Myfitnesspal on my own and got absolutely no where.
Slimming World also taught me how to eat sensibly, and how to eat foods to make you feel full.
And so I think the plan from now is to still go to meetings (I need the accountability of someone else, doing it by myself won't work) but fully calorie count, following the Slimming World mantra. It is interesting that one of the biggest losers in my SW group does follow this, I know he does.

Hi Wavey16 and welcome to our weight loss support forum. Personally I don't follow the slimming world program but watch this space as I'm sure someone will be able to help you with that.
This is the link to our pinned posts where you will find everything which we offer.I strongly recommend reading the "Welcome Newbies"and "When Weight Loss is a Struggle"
I have followed SW on and off for probably about 30 years, I lose a couple of stone and then end up in the 1lb up, 1lb down club and give up and it piles back on - it is sooo frustrating. I had a period where I followed SW but made a note also of the calories I was consuming and it was alarming. My consultant when I tried to talk to her about it was dismissive and unhelpful, she said "you know what you are supposed to do, don't look at the calories, trust the process", when I pointed out that I had been trusting the process for 30 years and was still far far away from target she basically lost interest and totally ignored me in class - I decided to vote with my feet and save my money, bought myself some new, accurate food and body weighing scales.
Looking around I joined the Nutracheck app 3 months ago and since then have lost 18 pound. Yes I do find it a pain weighing literally everything but it is becoming second nature. I miss the classes but do join in the forum on Nutracheck and everyone is so helpful and encouraging.
Some people swear by SW, if it works for them fair enough but I think being told "you can eat as much of this as you want, no weighing or measuring, fill your plate" is too much of a temptation for me - I needed to learn portion control and the app lets you monitor your carbs, protein, fats etc too.
I was on SlimmingWorld many years ago & it did help me go from 85kg down to 68kg .
Once I left I kept on eating the big plate full of free food & the other naughty foods also crept back in & the I regained most of the weight.
So I rejoined & then lost most of it & then left & then had to rejoin again.
I resented paying someone to weigh me.
I do find it easier to use the free version of MyFitnessPal & to weigh & log my food as my portion sizes were way to big but I ate them as in my head they were free foods.
Good luck
Hi Wavey16. I've done sw twice and always lost about 2 stone then put it back on and then some. As for running mot helping with weight loss, that's codswallop. I have a friend who has gone from a size 18 to a size 12 she has even ended up joining a running club. Xx
I did weightwatchers, not slimmers world and have kept most of the weight off for 15 years , would like to lose a bit ( about 10lb) now but favour low carb. Anyway I wanted to ask the original post-er Wavey, are you sure about those calorie values for the carbs. I have always found it difficult to calculate cals on dry foods that you then prepare with water. So maybe check your not confusing say 600g dry rice value with the cooked rice value. Also are you on the diabetics uk forum -I found it very informative and supportive so check it out maybe. ( my late mum was a diabetic).
Running is great exercise if you do enough of it but I think there is a lot of wisdom in the saying you can’t outrun a bad diet. It is certainly fab for toning up but because its quite exhausting at first beginners often feel they’ve expended more calories than they probably have . In general weightwatchers suggest exercise is treated seperately to the food side of weightloss -if you get the food side on track the exercise is a bonus.
I joined slimming world in February 2023 having never tried any form of diet before. I'd steadily gained weight over the period of about 15 years and was going on holiday in August 2023 and wanted to lose 6 stone.
I went to a meeting and was encouraged by all the positivity. I started on the eating plan immediately. I cut out milk and sugar from my brews (milky with 2 sugars for tea and coffee, now I'm 100% black coffee), breakfast consisted of 2 boiled eggs, an orange and a banana, lunch was a healthy ham and cheese wrap loaded with salad and then a slimming world menu dinner.
I stuck to the plan like glue, having a hi fi bar as a snack each day and low fat mini babybels as extra calcium.
And it worked a treat, I went from 18.5 stone to 13.5 stone in about 5 months, then had my holiday but made the other stone on my return.
I stopped going after Christmas but have stuck to my general plan with breakfast and lunch and then eating 'normally' for tea. I've put back on a stone but my wife is happy with that - she said I'd gone too skinny! I've kept at my current weight for a few months now by just being careful.
Along the way I started running too. Very little initially on the treadmill as I was too heavy, then gradually building up until I was running every morning. This helped accelerate the weight loss. I'm surprised by what you say about their attitude to fitness, body magic was a big thing when I was there, perhaps find another local group?
I really liked the slimming world way of doing things and it really worked for me.
Morning sausageandchips and welome. Thanks for supporting one of our members and well done on finding a programme that has worked for you, that is an amazing loss, well done.
