Anyone willing to dive in the psyche surrounding weight loss?

Do you think it’s more mental or more physical?

Both really. I have a certain mind set that eating hardly anything will help me loose weight but it doesn’t. I also put on lots of weight due to under active Thyroid which I can’t shift. Now I’m pre diabetic so trying to eat less sugar and carbs but as I can’t bring myself to eat more it’s a vicious circle.

Hello lizziep, and welcome back to Weight Loss Support,

Thanks for your reply to LavenderRoot, my personal view is that both elements are at play, even although it's not always an equal matter.

Hello LavenderRoot and welcome to Weight Loss Support,

That's a really interesting question, and from my perspective it leans towards mental, but as a post menopausal woman I think there are definitely some physical elements at play too.

If you're on a weight loss journey yourself, you'll find joining in with the groups on this forum very supportive. We have a variety of groups and you can find them by clicking on the link here: healthunlocked.com/weight-l... Have a look around and if you have any questions just ask away.

Good luck 🍀

I think sometimes it's put down to psychology when it may be physiology, like here, on food cravings archive.nytimes.com/well.bl...

Definitely mental in my case…emotional eating, comfort foods, addiction to sugar, seeking a short term pleasure source. I know I can lose weight if I eat small portions of the right foods, track my calories, drink more water, fruit teas, cut out alcohol etc but I keep self sabotaging and sneaking snacks, baking cakes and serving up too much food. I have to keep reminding myself that my health is what matters most!

Good luck in your own self analysis and best wishes for a healthier future!

It is a complex combination of factors, emotional , spiritual, physical, attitudes and expectations all combining to make us eat cake.

I feel for a lot it is physical as illness can blank a lot of focus on eating and in pain we eat differently. It is more mental for me . Food / sweets / cake was a reward. A good girl got more sweets . A great girl ate everything up .
