Skipping breakfast

Is it true the slogan “ Breakfast is the most important meal of the day !” was created by Kelloggs in an advert ?

I’ve been watching Dr Eric Berg on YouTube and he talks about intermittent fasting , skipping breakfast ( like I did this morning with only having a black coffee to perk me up ) . I don’t feel hungry right now but I do have a pear in my work bag for later on before my lunch which is only a sandwich then spag boll tonight .

Hope I lose some weight .

I don’t tend to eat breakfast only because it’s another meal to tie myself up in knots planning for.. and also I don’t overeat when it comes to lunch or dinner, figure out what works for you, I have heard great things about intermittent fasting

Hi Richard260

Apparently that slogan was indeed a marketing ploy for a well known cereal, and later taken up by the bacon industry. However, people did eat breakfast before all that, just not cornflakes :)

What works best for you is what you should follow, and there are lots of members here who follow IF. Just make sure that you have enough food in the window you set yourself for eating as I understand that it can mess with your metabolism (in the wrong way for weight loss), if you don't.

We have a Daily Diary where members record their menu, weight loss plan and sometimes what exercise they have planned which might suit you, you can find this week's here:

The very best of luck on your new plan, and enjoy your spag bol :)

Hello, I’m one of those people who are never hungry in the morning. But somehow it was always a given that a healthy way to eat is to eat breakfast. So any time I was addressing my eating, I would force myself to eat breakfast and after that I would be hungry most of the day, at the end of the day consuming much more food that I would had I simply skipped breakfast. It was a relief to discover that breakfast is not necessary for healthy eating. I now never eat breakfast and I don’t miss it at all - I never had time in the morning anyway. Having said that, I know people who are genuinely hungry in the morning and always looking forward to breakfast - those I believe absolutely should eat breakfast :) you only need to figure out which one you are naturally, when you put habits and routine away. Good luck 😊

I absolutely love breakfast, I can't start my day on an empty stomach 😂. That being said I can sometimes do over 10,000 steps before lunch so I'd be pretty starving if I didn't. I have found that if I overeat breakfast it does mess with me for the rest of the day though! So some breakfast but not too much works great for me. If no breakfast works for you then that's great too!

I guess when the whole breakfast is the most important meal of the day thing was going on a lot of the population would be working in manual labour jobs and so would need a hearty breakfast to get them going. Even what we consider manual jobs nowadays have more machinery and things so probably aren't as strenuous as back in the day... That's my take on it anyway!

I feel like most meals it depends what you eat . Companies that manufacture certain products will plug whatever they can but watch hidden sugars /salt in the more processed cereal . I have a fairly manual job so depend on breakfast not to snack and last till a 13.30 lunch. I have porridge made with water with full fat Greek yogurt and fruit on top with a Dolce Gusto milky coffee . I calorie count so have 3 meals per day on a 450 , 400 , 600 guidance . I try not to eat after 7pm ish . It is what works for your lifestyle so your eating is easy to maintain and sustain . I would never allow my 5 boys to go to school without breakfast but they wouldn’t anyway . They could eat a truck load of anything!

I lost 18lbs last year. I find low cal every day for me difficult as I love food! I now only eat breakfast on high days and holidays and I also fast two days a week until 6.30 p.m. I also eat fairly low carb and mainly continue with that. That’s the only way I could lose the weight and now maintain. Exercise keeps me fit but doesn’t have much effect on my weight. I’m 71 so age is against me. I can also exercise in a fasted state and there is some evidence that you burn more fat doing certain types. You just have to find the best way for you.

Apparently so. In essence you have to break your fast - who says how long that fast should be? Maybe it’s more to do with the quality of what we break it fast with rather than the time? Also apparently the research that the dietary guidelines recommending low fat diets was funded by the sugar industry and presented cherry picked data, not a full picture.

Without going back to critique the original research it’s difficult to judge the trustworthy-ness of it. But I do have some faith in the background and skill set of some of the scientist and researchers I have heard discuss it.

Interesting how it turns some of those societally held beliefs on their head isn’t it.

Good luck. Skipping breakfast with a roughly 16:8 fasting to eating ratio seems to be helping me. Having a cut off time that I don’t eat (or drink alcohol after) definitely seems to help.

If you eat a low carb diet you'll probably find it no problem to skip breakfast, indeed most low carb advocates say that two meals a day are enough. I'm a creature of habit so I tend to have a bowl of porridge every day followed by a pickled beetroot (the nitrates content is good for the circulation and lowering blood pressure) sometimes followed by a couple of rashers of bacon, sometimes an avocado.
