As I continue to eat more healthily and continue to exercise more, I find I am comparing my weight to when I was X numbers of years old. For example, when I was 17, I weighed in at 11 stone 3 pounds (71.21 kilos), in the under 75 kilo-bracket at Judo. I had a 34-inch waist and a 36-inch chest. When my skeleton stopped physically growing in my early twenties, I had expanded to a 44-inch chest, but still retained my 34-inch waist … my weight eventually settled at around 12 stone 4 pounds (78.02 kilos), in the under 80 kilo-bracket at Judo. Say around 25 by then.

So, as I am losing weight, I find I am now comparing my weight to, when I was … years old, therefore this week’s song that came to mind was Holding Back the Years, sung by the wonderful Mick Hucknall. The only problem with the song is when he sings, “Wasted all those years” since I do not believe anyone has wasted all those years. I believe our years that have gone before us make us who we are, and are not a waste as a result, even if we do make some stupid mistake or some bad choices. It is those choices that make us who we are.

The other lyric in the song I disagree with is, “'Cause nothing here has grown” because over the years my stomach has definitely grown, but alas as the great Stephen Fry says, “It is a direct result of what you put in your mouth!”

Incidentally I eventually got my black belt in Judo by the age of 38, and that is roughly where I am up to in years now, but I am determined to at least get back to my twenties! I am also back to my 34-inch waist. :-)

Have a great week in whatever you do.

Holding back the years

Thinking of the fear I've had so long

When somebody hears

Listen to the fear that's gone

Strangled by the wishes of pater

Hoping for the arms of mater

Get to me the sooner or later, oh

Holding back the tears

Chance for me to escape from all I know

Holding back the tears

'Cause nothing here has grown

I've wasted all my tears

Wasted all those years

Nothing had the chance to be good

Nothing ever could, yeah, oh

I'll keep holding on

I'll keep holding on

I'll keep holding on

I'll keep holding on, so tight

Well I've wasted all my years

Wasted all of those years

And nothing had the chance to be good

'Cause nothing ever could, oh yeah

Oh

I'll keep holding on

I'll keep holding on

I'll keep holding on

I'll keep holding on

Holding

Holding

Holding

Holding, la-la-la, la, la-la

I said, ooh, yeah

That's all I have today

It's all I have to say
