As weight-loss is said to be 80% diet and 20% exercise, I think the exercise portion should best be the type of exercise that you most enjoy as you're more likely to do it if you're having a good time.

What sort of working out do you most have a mind to do, CeeBee123 ?

Hi and welcome, charleyb123 :)

As SofaJockey has said, losing weight is more about your food choices than the exercise you do, so I advise you look at that first, then decide what sort of exercise you wish to do.

This is a nice simple eating plan healthunlocked.com/api/redi...

All of the information you need about the forum can be found in Pinned Posts healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh... and I hope you'll be joining all the Events, Challenges and Clubs that we run, especially a weigh-in and the daily diary.

If you haven't already taken it, here's a tour of the forum healthunlocked.com/?tour=true

We've found active participation to be key to successful weight loss and, of course, it's a good way to get to know people, find inspiration and share support and encouragement.

Wishing you all the best :)

“Work out Women” is a good app! It’s got a complete range of different exercises on there, some of them are completely impossible for me haha! but there are loads of different exercises and completely free too. There’s low impact ones, no jumping workouts and sitting down ones too, I’d say it’s definitely worth scrolling through and favouriting some to have a go at, good luck

Hello and welcome back, TGA15 😊

I can see you were here a long time ago and there will have been many changes.

You'll find all the information you need about the forum in our Pinned Posts healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh... including a Welcome message. A good place to start is by joining a weekly weigh in on the day of your choice, and using the Daily Diary, where members share their meal plans.

This gives you a tour of the forum healthunlocked.com/?tour=true and, along with Pinned Posts, will show you how things work. I hope you'll become an active member and we will see you joining in around the forum 😊

PS the app doesn’t give access to all parts of the forum so we advise everyone to get rid of the app and log on to the full website using the browser on their phone

I think food and exercise are important. Agree though that weight loss is more about food than exercise. Unless you are very fit to begin with , you are unlikely to exercise many calories off.

I use My Fitness Pal to keep track of what I'm eating but rarely log exercise as it would already be counted under moderately active daily calories (as is the NHS site) I'm retired so don't get the day to day walking around a large site or up and down stairs, which I think, don't know, that in addition to weekly dance was moderately active,

My moderately active now is to just do something cardiovascular every day. So a brisk 2 mile walk (did three miles with a walking group till problems with hip) or Rosemary Connelly's Ultimate Body Workout cardio section.

I also do physio recommended exercises with some yoga and the strength and suppleness part of Rosemary Connelly to try to keep muscle mass all over.

Keeping muscle is important full stop . But it also helps burn calories as muscle demands more, and it increases the ability to exercise. Exercise has also been shown to give your metabolism a boost.

Cardio makes you lose weight strength training muscle. You might actually enjoy buying a rebounder mini inside trampoline it can build both if you like the pool believe it or not just walking in it has resistance and helps strengthening !! It’s nice to mix things up. I like using 3 lb weights and just do bicep curls and squats with them. You might like looking into beginner exercise using therabands as they provide resistance to build muscle YouTube using your friend!!

If you are actually tending towards obese, I strongly suggest that you don't. It will not make any meaningful difference to your weightloss progress, and you run the risk of serious injury (which will put paid to any attempt to become truly slim later down the line). A daily walk would be your best bet. It doesn't cost anything and it will noticeably improve your cardiovascular fitness.

Get your diet right and you will lose weight. If you find you're not losing weight, it's because your diet isn't right (not because you're eating too much).

Hi Charley123,

Having been on the programme for only 5 weeks ( and obese for 30 years) I have lost 4kg - for me I have always thought I ate healthy foods but until I started counting the calories I realised how little tweaks make such a difference - I would urge you to start there.

My tips for exercise - I loved the dance to walk video - fun and engaging and you can feel the difference in energy levels after a few days. I also have an exercise bike - it counts the calories you use so helped me realise why food intake was more important,

Good luck

Whilst I agree that exercise doesn't necessarily lose you weight what it does do is help you feel better about yourself, it gives you a sense of achievement boosts your self esteem which ultimately gives you a better attitude to healthy eating. I'm obese, I was possibly in the morbidly obese range, I went onto YouTube (free) and started a few routines for ultimate beginners - you know what u can and can't do. 2 months later I do a 20 min workout with Team Body Project almost every morning (still free via YT) except Sunday when I do yoga. I also walk a lot and do 3 eve sessions of stretching/yoga type activities via a zoom trainer. I feel better and healthier than I have done for years. Plenty out there for free - give it a go!

I like Holly Honjo - she is very ordinary and down to earth and specialises in workouts for the overweight and obese, there are loads of her work outs on YouTube completely free.

Hi Charley b,

I am probably considered morbidly obese and am on a health and fitness plan -my own.

I started off last year giving up smoking and tried not to put on weight but did.

So far this year I have lost a stone and a half in weight by counting calories but hadn’t done anything about fitness other than working on our allotment so I decided to check out online workouts. I found body project who do loads of different workouts for different levels of fitness. You can pay to subscribe or just do the ones on YouTube. I find Daniel really encouraging and workout every morning to one of his classes. Before I embark on any new workout I watch it first to make sure it is suitable for my dodgy knee. I hate the gym but I love doing this in my own home and keep a daily record of what I have done. The NHS have loads of fitness advice and some videos of Pilates etc. By the way I am 66 so, Charley if I can do it anyone can. Good luck in your weight loss journey.

Hi and welcome to the weight loss forum.. May I suggest that you follow all the links you've been sent in your welcome package It's best to use the website as opposed to the app.

I hope you join the Daily Diary, there's lots of delicious ideas there. When you have decided your “weigh in day”, join one of the weekly weigh ins.

If you would like to know if you're BMI is "Healthy" after the weight you've lost , I suggest you run your stats through the NHS site.

Hi,

I have sent for a slow burn workout book which says it is for people like us who want to exercise but aren't up to aerobics and In my case aren't able to do a lot of weight baring.

Will let you know if it's any good as i have a history of getting these things wrong.
