No sugar challenge week 1 of 8

I have been told I'm high risk for type 2 diabetes, something that's totally preventable so I want to do something about it! My main weakness is refined sugars so I know I need to do something about it! It's supposed to take 8 weeks to get the sugar out your system, so in 8 weeks time we should see a real difference!

There's some basic information on the NHS website-

And some really good informant on the gestational diabetes website in the diet section. I know we don't have GD but the diet is just low sugar so it's all relevant! I found the sections on yogurt and cereal really helpful

The NHS have a change4life food scanner app to check how much sugar is in your food.

I think this is going to be a challenge so let's support each other!

I don't think I eat much sugar but there might be some hidden sugars I'm not aware of, this will keep me vigilant, thank you! :-) x

Kudos to you for acknowledging that T2D is totally preventable. I wish the medical profession would shout this from the rooftops. There is absolutely no need for so many people to end up living with this terrible disease.

As you jump into your eight-week challenge, I would suggest reading up on all the biochemistry of sugars and starches; the main problem with the modern Western diet is not so much the surfeit of sugar (although there is that) but the almost complete reliance on carbohydrates for energy. This horribly-unbalanced diet forces your body to make compensatory adjustments that many bodies just aren't capable of ... and that's where their metabolism falls off a cliff.

If you want to wean yourself off a sugar addiction, I can strongly recommend doing a couple of weeks of "keto". It's very effective at curbing sugar cravings, and after the two weeks is up you'll find that your appetite naturally starts to guide you towards the correct food choices. You do need to do it correctly though - it's not all about steak and eggs, as the media would have you believe.

Hi, I really need to get my head around this. I can eat a lot of sugar as chocolate. Some days I get the shakes which I overcome with sugar! I can go months eating 'healthy' but when I fall off the wagon I fall hard. I have always relied on carbohydrates for energy having spent most of my life in outdoor work, however age and health changed that and now I eat too many carbs. I however would happily live on the same diet everyday and this is where I find it most challenging. I want a meal plan consisting of small healthy meals that don't involve avocados and some kind of dressing!!! I would need cheese and biscuits in there somewhere 😋 I live very rurally so fresh anything is not always possible either....

Anyone have any ideas about this. I really need to eat little and often

Eggs, beef mince, sausages, bacon, Greek yoghurt, cheese, double cream, butter, cauliflower, leeks, broccoli, white cabbage, frozen berries. Start by eating all those things in various combinations. All of those things should be accessible & have reasonable good shelf life. I can do you a meal plan if you like. Forget salad. X

That's really kind thanks, I might take you up on that! At the moment I have a 6 week old baby so I'm eating easy stuff but plan to make more of an effort as time goes on! I'm going shopping tomorrow so that's a great start for my shopping list 🙂

That’s great Laura. Check out Dr David Unwin & Dr Jen Unwin for no sugar for curing Type 2 diabetes. They are doing a no sugar summer - which I have seen on Twitter if you use that. I am pretty sure they have seen positive results far faster than in eight weeks. It takes just a few days to get sugar ‘out of your system’ ie out if your bloodstream, if you give up sugar (& rice & potatoes & bread) but it takes quite a bit longer for your insulin levels to get back in balance. It also takes a couple of months to change your tastebuds so it’s no longer a challenge not to eat sugar.
