Hi Westcountrygoth , welcome to the forum.

Well I’m not sure if what I shall say here is good news or bad news for you, but you don’t need to exercise to lose weight.

Exercise is of course good for you for numerous reasons, but weight loss comes from eating less, and eating the right foods. Forget everything you probably learned about low fat foods, embrace full fat milk, yogurts, cheese and meats, reduce drastically the amount of beige food (potatoes, rice, pasta, bread) which you eat, cut out sugar completely if you can, as it is highly addictive and eat three home cooked meals a day. Snacks won’t be necessary if you eat proper food, as you won’t be hungry.

That might all sound impossible, but when someone from Admin gives you the links to websites for healthy eating, you can make a start by reading and informing yourself how it can be done.

And it most certainly can be done - just look at all the “badges” people are wearing on this site, showing 2,3,4,5 even 6 stone losses. I am tagging Pineapple27 here, so she can share her story of weight loss with a disability which means she can’t exercise.

So take heart, and good luck, your new life starts (slowly, no quick fixes, I’m afraid) here.

Hi and welcome, Westcountrygoth :)

To be honest, weight loss is far more about what you eat and don't eat, than exercise. No exercise should be undertaken that will cause, or exacerbate pain. Losing weight will be the best thing you can do to help your knees, so you need to make changes to your diet first and foremost.

Have a look at these for a different way of doing it healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh... and phcuk.org/wp-content/upload...

All of the information you need about the forum can be found in Pinned Posts healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh... and I hope you'll be joining all the Events, Challenges and Clubs that we run, especially a weigh-in and the daily diary.

We've found active participation to be key to successful weight loss and, of course, it's a good way to get to know people, find inspiration and share support and encouragement.

Wishing you all the best for 2020 :)

Absolutely agree with the others. Weight loss is about what you eat. Exercise helps you stay happy and healthy but that is a bit further down the road for you. It’s very very likely that losing weight will help your knees - our knees carry eight time the strain of our weight. So every pound you lose, is eight pounds relief on your knees. I don’t know how much you have to lose of course, but losing a stone is your knees no longer lugging an eight stone around. There is emerging evidence that a low carb high fat diet helps arthritis and other inflammatory conditions, which may be relevant to you.

I had to lose weight for surgery on a badly damaged ankle, I used the pain and misery to help me focus. I repeatedly tell myself no food can be so good it’s better than being fit and pain free.

Have a good read of all the links, especially think about reducing carbohydrates and eating enough healthy fats as that will help arthritis too.

Please feel free to ask if you have any questions 😊

Welcome aboard :)

I came here saying I knew how to do it, too, but I found that much of what I "knew" was wrong. You've had good advice from Trimmerteacher about eating healthy fats and cutting beige food: maybe you knew that but it was news to me: I thought we were supposed to go for low fat products and fill up on baked potatoes and pasta dishes.

If anyone has told you it's all about eating less and moving more, here's a good explanation of why that fails psychologytoday.com/us/blog...

Hope to see you around on a weigh-in and using the Daily Diary :)

Thanks for tagging me Hidden

I have a significant physical disability Westcountrygoth , my mobility is really minimal - I use a wheelchair outside of the house. I am also very short (4ft 8") as a consequence of my impairment.

I currently eat 1100 for weight loss...

In terms of exercise, I have slowly increased my exercise from nothing, to swimming once a week - have tried and enjoyed Pilates (which if you have reduced mobility or movement can really help address imbalance).

I find it really difficult/impossible to do weight bearing exercises.

I currently try and do about 1 hour of seated stretches - I also run/walk once a fortnight using an antigravity treadmill (I pay for 10 x 30 minute sessions - £138.00 - £13.80 a session). They have these treadmill around the country, I use one at the Circle Clinic in Reading where I live.

Exercise is important, not just for earning calories but to strengthen bones and muscles which really help with balance, improving mobility and prevention of falls. I have noticed a significant improvement in these areas.

Thank you

I have a question about beige foods as no wonder we get a bit confused

I had a VERY beige meal the other day ie bulgar wheat with lean chicken and chick peas but I thought all 3 of those things were healthy items to eat? I had a big portion of greens on the side but I have a lot of beans and pulses which are a cream / beige colour plus Iike bulgar wheat however beige it is lol
